YOUTHS have been plaguing a Stafford estate by illegally driving old cars, sometimes crashing into walls and colliding with other vehicles.

Staffordshire Police is appealing for witnesses following the incidents on the Highfields estate.

Stafford Deputy Borough LPT Commander, Inspector Mark Joynson said: "We have been made aware that young people who are not legally old enough to drive are using old vehicles to drive around the estate and off road sometimes crashing into walls and colliding with other vehicles.

"This is not only extremely dangerous as they are putting their own lives in danger and the lives of others but it's also illegal to drive under the age of 17. I'm also very concerned as the vehicles being used are not roadworthy and have no MOT.

"Therefore, I would urge anyone with any information regarding these incidents and in particular where these old vehicles are being stored, to contact Staffordshire Police on 101."

Alternatively, those with information can contact the independent crime charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or through their anonymous online form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.

No personal details are taken, information cannot be traced or recorded and you will not go to court.

Why doesn't Mark Joynson get an officer into a police car to drive round the estate and let the ANPR system ping the uninsured, untaxed and unMOT'ed vehicles, deal with these by mass removal or crushing - breakers yard only a few minutes up the road.

Couple of unmarked cars for a few evenings to record any that get missed or driven poorly.

Visit registered owner next day, issue notice that if vehicle is seen again it'll be removed/crushed.

Surely the lack of insurance is a bigger issue than no MOT as there are financial implications for any victims.

Lack of police presence is the issue, same with McDonalds in north end, constant street racing, drifting, cruising and other anti-social behavior into the early hours - no one turns up when reported.

Guess it's easier to just talk to the newspaper...

I'm guessing one of said cars is the Suzuki swift smashed up and dumped at the field carpark on Weston downs
