I use this site

http://currentsky.com/index.html

mostly because it was the first one i came across, but it's good for keeping up on what's up there.

I'm gonna go up to Galloway Forest Park with a borrowed telescope and gaze for a while.
Lucky you - i hope the 'seeing' is good for you. Best night sky i ever saw was up on the west coast of Scotland - truly majestic.

Northern Lights have been visible in the last few days, apparently - from suitable locations..
Someone i know was rather excited by this, thinking it likely that they would be visible here - on account of a rather tenuous grip on the Geography of the British Isles.

Sadly it fell to me to inform them that Northumberland and Northampton are not remotely in the same 'ball park'.

They were once (at least that i know of) visible here - not that i saw them - must've been circa 1990?

Does anyone go stargazing locally, or know of any local astronomy clubs?
Not that I know too, I think that might be due to the poor visibility in the area.

I'll reply if I come across any because I plan to spend some time looking for somewhere to go!

Thank's for replying, if I hear anything I'll post too!

I'm very much an amateur but have been pleasantly surprised about the planets I've been able to see from our town back garden on a clear night.

Last time Halley's Comet came past, we used to use this location - it's fairly local, a bit elevated and the area to the south is reasonably clear of the dreaded streetlights for a good few miles.

Thank you all for being so helpful!

The light polution is a pain, I remember being totally blown away and getting a sore neck by how amazing the night sky is in the north west of Scotland.

I was lucky enough to spend several weeks at sea back in '99, and the captain killed all the external lights for me one night so that I could get a proper look around. It was amazing, half the world was full of stars and the other half just black. It was amazing with the lights on TBH, but you saw so much more without. Not sure if you're legally allowed to do it though!

The night's sky is amazing, especially if you can view it without bleed from street lighting.

Not quite as isolated as you, but I went to Ireland two years ago to my friend's uncle's house, which was right out in the sticks in Portsalon. He had a hot-tub in his backyard, so we sat out in the hot-tub, in the middle of March, drinking wine, beer and the like, just gazing up at the marvel and expanse of the night's sky - and spotting an incredible amount of shooting stars too. Although that could have been the alcohol.

If you drive over to the Norbury Estate you get very clear views of the night stars as there no street lights or any lighting come to that

Bridgeford to Woodseaves Road, left turn for Gnosall, then right turn onto the estate where the cows used to be
