Prompted by this thread:

Bring back the cuffy

What do people think of a system to 'rate' posts? So instead of just 'Liking' a post, you could 'Like' it, 'Dislike' it, rate it 'Hilarious', 'Off-topic', 'Staffordtastic', etc. It would work a bit like this:

...and each post would show how many ratings it has got, where the 'Likes' currently are:

I realise there was a lot of controversy over the old skill/cuffy points system, so I thought I would put this to the public vote. :)

Note: The poll is anonymous, so no-one will know how you have voted!

Would this be additional to or instead of the current option?
It would replace it; 'Like' would simply be one of the options you can choose. All existing 'Likes' would be retained and transferred. :)

I've got mixed feelings on this, on one hand by not having the cuffy I thought would be a good thing and would encourage more people to join in the forum ( I include myself in this) for various reasons.

On the other hand not having it appears to have led to a lot of bickering that wasn't so apparent before & Sometimes I don't like what someone has said but don't particularly want to get involved & embroiled in the thread & would like the cuffy button back at this time.

If you do bring it back please don't show the negative stats on the persons public profile (just on the post) as I found this distasteful for various reasons.

I like the idea of an 'off topic' button, I would appreciate one of those.

Also, please keep the ability to change the choice, purely as some of us have touch sensitive screens & can often click on something without meaning to.

Yeah, a bit undecided on this too. In one way it stifles debate, you may just cuffy instead of a response (especially if you ate in the wrong ;)) whearas without it you may discuss things. Then again, sometimes your response would just be to call them a nob, in which case a cuffy button is better.

I dunno, will go with whatever people choose!

I concur!

:strange: The less choice the better me thinks! Simple Like/Unlike buttons would suffice; you get the feel if people agree from the replies, and if you have hit a sore/warm spot or raised some hackles, folk soon let you know. Just, for the sake of a any non de-nominational, PC, sentient (Or not!) creative power type thing, don't let it become a competition of score counting, definitely don't need or want a League:better:!

:strange: mmmmmm, unless of course there is gonna be relegation to the Cannock forum!

:strange: mmmmmm, which forum would you get promoted to?

:strange: mmmmmm, the 'Sheffield Forum' Cookie?

:strange: mmmmmm, Speaking (Tapping!) of whom, where 'as the (South) Yorkie disappeared to?

Maybe not even have a score quoted for each, but a combined one? That way you have no idea how many voted either way, just the average feeling about a post?

EDIT: Maybe not even a score, but a colour? Fade from green to red, with grey as the center point?

Enjoying a drop of red.

Heavens, it's all getting a bit complicated now!

My default option would still be neither cuffy or like for anything. If something irritates you or pleases you then post about it.

I get what your saying tek, but if it goes back to being anonymous voting I fear for it ending up as a point scoring competition that gon2seed was talking about.

I like the fact that you know which posts are liked and by who, this wasn't apparent in the old skill / cuffy system and I used to get the feeling people were getting cuffied just because a general dislike had been formed and not because of what had been posted, and felt this also happened in a lesser extent with the skill points.

Ah, wasnt clear. I meant on a post by post basis, rather than have totals. It would show that people thought you were correct in your statement, or full of crap, but have no consequence in other threads. Maybe we could keep it visible, have a kinda these people like and these dont. A thumbs up/down, and clicking on one shows who voted?

The only total I'd be interested in seeing would be something like rating a post useful. Maybe for giving out info thats a pain to find, helping other forum members out etc.

I like the idea of a thanks or a useful post option that Tek said, this would be a really lovely, positive and friendly addition if your adding in post rating options. Big thumbs up to that idea :)

Result may be folks thinking about what will score before they post; which is what I was really concerned about when I originally posted. Wouldn't like to see people posting, or not, on the basis of the reaction they might get. Of course I come back on to see if folks have responded, but wouldn't like to see a grafical reprsentation of my rating/score! I think I come on and post if I have something to say about a subject, or of course have somat to say/get off my chesta and there is no thread, then I write my own! It is good to see people agreeing with your opinion, and I guess if I thought people would be very against a comment, I would think very carfully about posting it; & if I believed I was wriite I would probably have the response ready! To some up my ramble, if it ain't broke don't fix it! IMHO it most definitely ain't!

I think the "like" function is as far as it should go and even then the forum wouldn't be any the worse for not having them.

Introducing negative ratings is a retrograde step. The cuffy system proved that negative ratings are not a good thing and just stifle debate. Any kind of negative ratings just encourages cliques, mutual backside kissing, and people assigning a negative rating because they have a personal grudge - and not based upon the content of the post. On the old forum, there were several new members who got "cuffied" for absolutely no reason and furthermore those people doing the cuffying could hide behind anonymity which wasn't good either. All that does is discourage new members and discourage discussion. If people disagree with something then fine, that's what the "reply" button and your keyboard is for.

Yes, I agree. Although I do use the "likes" as it only offers a postive option, I can also see that the down side might be that might be put off posting if they didn't get any "likes". In that sense, the fairest thing would not to be have any likes, dislikes, cuffy or anything since ultimately the point of a forum should be to express your view rather than just pressing a button which at the end of the day doesn't further the discussion.
