Anybody know if the Soup Kitchen is open today (2nd January)? It is a bank holiday I know!

Everybody raves about The Soup Kitchen but I really don’t see the appeal.

I don’t go in very often because the décor reminds me of Sunday diners with a mad, great- auntie, in-law, twice removed (you get the idea)

I went in today and was rudely and begrudgingly told I could order from the table but I was sat in the in the wrong area for waitress service. Two ok coffees, a long wait and a not very nice lasagne later I’m left wondering what everyone else sees in this place?

I went in recently because a friend of mine is obsessed with the place, can't say I was too impressed either. You walk in to an area with self service trays, but there is also a queue waiting to be seated- what do they want from me?

Food also poor and expensive. When I order a cheese, ham and pineapple toastie I expect a toasted sandwich with pinched together sides and small chunks of ham and pineapple. What I got appeared to be fried, not held together and with ham that appeared to be from a packet and pineapple chunks that were definitely out of a can.

It reminded me of the occasion in Ireland where a cheese sandwich turned out to be plastic cheese in bread. And that was it.

Enjoying a drop of red.
I realise I'm in a minority, probably on here and certainly amongst my circle of friends, but I really like the place. Yes it is a little on the pricey side but I have found the food to be consistently good and the service in waitress service section excellent.

Having said that it's better if you are going for lunch to time it for after 2pm when the lunchtime pensioner crowd has died down, you don't have to wait for a table and the staff have time to think.

It is always, at lunchtime, almost obscenely busy.

I don't get it either.

But you can't argue that it is not, at lunchtime, almost obscenely busy. Because it is.

Which would suggest, at the very least, that it is providing something that needs catering for.

No, i don't get it either.

But then i'll laugh at a piece of paint but not pay for lunch. It is probably wise not to worry about what i might want.

Use to go regularly but two of the waitresses put a stop to that, sat in a corner having a coffee trying to have a chat to my hubby as he works away a lot we wanted to talk, plus I had a horrible couple of weeks visiting poorly relative and sorting a funeral and house clearance for another. Two waitresses stood right by the side of our table having a natter rather loudly one was clearly upset over something, as they continued their loud conversation about something that was the last thing I wanted to listen to having had the time I'd had. I grumbled to my hubby about it, as we couldn't hear each other or have a private conversation and as it was busy, there wasn't many places left. after my grump to hubby they moved away a little, where the younger one of the two said well they can complain if they want, I get it all the time in the shop too I' m use to it. Very professional....not, shall not be returning ever again.

For the same old lady character without the queues, try The Grove.

It is a very long time indeed since I volunteered to wander through the town centre in the daytime but when I did, people were being shoe-horned in to the Soup Kitchen by the smiley Sandy and The Grove looked relatively quiet. I think the steep stairs help. Three quarters of the clientele can't scale them.

And I don't get it, either.

I just wish they would bring back proper Stephanie's, under its original owners. I like the idea that all the same people who used to be in there daily would magically appear again at their usual tables.
