I eat soya products but have to watch some, tofu seriously upsets me - or rather upsets my digestive system.

"what, you like the colour blue?!? BUT WHAT IS YOUR MORAL JUSTIFICATION FOR LIKING IT??" :grr:

This is very interesting, I have a question Soy is used in tofu, soy milk and various dairy and meat substitutes. It is also used in fermented foods like miso, natto and tempeh too.

So what about vegans who have a thyroid problem? I'm not vegan but I am hypothyroid and avoid soy as it disrupts my hormones as it's a goitrogen, which can cause a goiter, trigger the disease itself if you don't have it or slow it down completely. More so in places that are iodine deficient. How do you know if it's genetically modified? Do you just buy organic?

What are other substitutes for vegans?

Thanks

The evidence appears to be if you have adequate iodine intake (which you mentioned) in your diet that this cancels out any goiter causing effects of soya and that it can be beneficial in reducing thyroid cancer risk.

There's various articles around if you fancy a read:

There's another really good one which annoyingly I can't find at the moment.

That aside it isn't overly difficult to avoid soya as a vegan. For instance, there are plant milks made from rice, almonds, oats and peas out there. There are also vegan soya free "cheeses". A lot of the meat alternatives don't involve soya either e.g. Linda McCartney sausages are made from wheat. Of course it isn't strictly necessary to buy any of these substitutes if you cook more from scratch and make use of beans/pluses/grains as a protein source.

GM free - you have to go on manufacturer info if they tell you.
