TalkTalk hacked - Millions of customers' information compromised

The reason I don't do internet banking..
internet banking has nothing to do with it.. talktalk were hacked, and their customer data stolen..

if (for example) you bank with HSBC and they were to be hacked, the hackers would have your details, regardless of whether you personally use internet banking or not..

the point here is, if you are a talktalk customer (or have ever been a talktalk customer), then chances are all of your personal details are now "out there" somewhere, regardless of how careful you personally have been.. it's completely beyond the control of the end user / customer..

I have a Direct Debit to TalkTalk. Other than my sort-code and account number, address and phone number, I don't think they've got anything else on me. Certainly no card numbers of any sort. Internet banking means I can look at transactions on a daily basis and, possibly, spot anything dodgy fairly quickly.

This makes no difference unfortunately. This is about the records that talk talk hold on it's customers. If you have internet - which obviously you do, then your internet provider has details for the account or card that they take your bill payments from. In the case of talk talk customers - this is what could have been stolen - regardless of whether you do internet banking or not.

EDIT - db beat me to it ;)

We both know somebody that is security-mad and will not use internet banking - "because I don't want people having my bank details" - she was quite shocked when I pointed out that everybody that she sends a cheque to has her sort code and account number - and a copy of her signature.

it's more the fact that all of the stolen data is the exactly the sort of thing one needs in order to usurp someone's identity.. so someone could quite easily get a loan in your name, given all of the information you have just stated above..

for that reason, one of the ways talktalk are trying to mitigate this attack is by offering their customers a 1 year account at a credit agency, so they can keep an eye on their credit record.. one more thing to have to check online!

just heard the director of talktalk on the news saying that a ransom demand has been made from someone claiming to be the hackers..

Indeed but it would be wise to change your ib password on a regular basis, simply as good practice, if you don't already do so.

Indeed - I was just about to change my TalkTalk pass word, but it's all down whilst the excitement is going on.

I have had someone try to tie a debt to my address - she was a student at an Oxford University college and they were chasing her for a £2,000 bar bill - she is now a well-respected academic at a prestigious university.

"TalkTalk said there was a chance that some of the following customer data had been accessed:
  • Names and addresses
  • Dates of birth
  • Email addresses
  • Telephone numbers
  • TalkTalk account information
  • Partial credit card details
  • Bank account numbers and sort codes"
In other words a complete identity theft kit.

TalkTalk have just sent me an email saying that my bill is ready to view, but of course it isn't, as "My Account" is still unavailable.
