Yelverton field?
I used to fly kites there 10-20 years ago. I've still got the kites, so maybe I should dig them out now that I've retired - a good way of keeping fit.
I used to launch parachutes off them using a kite messenger - a device that travels up the line, is triggered near the top, drops the parachute (or whatever) and slides down the line for the next parachute. I say "whatever" - as well as parachutes, we used to launch a flat foam Lancaster bomber off it, reinforced by balsa wood and weighed down by a penny taped to the nose. On one occasion, it crossed the field and flew 100 yards up Torrington Avenue. I dread to think what would have happened if someone had been driving down the road. It'd make for an interesting insurance claim form.
I also used to fly kites at the castle when they held Kite Days. I never had too many problems getting them in the air, but with the uneven ground and the trees surrounding it, I don't think it's the best site.
