Once upon a time i lived here

It is difficult to give you some idea of the the view that greeted me when i did, but this is as close as i can get.

Essentially, i was on the England side of the Wye, my view was mostly of the Wales side of the same.

It was a happy time for me, and i enjoyed it as much as could possibly be expected. Could it have been the Best of Times? Only time will tell - i certainly hold it dear.

One thing i will carry with me is the rain. Countless times it was quite evident that the Welsh side of the Wye was experiencing the most persistent of precipitation - almost permanently pissing down - whilst my side most often escaped it entirely. My house lived in the 'rain shadow' - i felt like i was at the very boundary of those weather systems bounding over the Atlantic, all the while expending their energy until they reached... the other side of the valley from, well, my house!

It was a blessing - but the other thing i'll carry with me is that whenever i hear this -

... i can only hear 'why does it always rain on Wales?' in my head.

Once upon another time i lived here

When i lived there, this place was called 'La Lune Bar' - and it had this on the jukebox -

- i'm reliably informed that i made a complete arse of myself with these ingredients.

Seeing as i appear to be doing this, i might as well do it a bit more.

Another life i lived, though thankfully a brief one, was lived here - notable for the regular alarums from the nearby Broadmoor Hospital, so regular that if it went off on a Wednesday afternoon and was for real, it was very unlikely that you would 'duck & cover'.

Most notably for me, given that i was rarely there on a Wednesday, this was where i was going on the morning of September 11th, 2001.

I don't know about you, but i actually went to the top of the World Trade Center in what must have been about 1980? 1981 tops? It was also notable as the venue that my fear of heights was confirmed as a thing of the past - notable mention for the CN Tower for starting the process. Without wishing to sound ridiculous, there was a place within me that was that place.

I was listening to the radio in the car and they kept talking about the World Trade Center - your ears are pricked because this is somewhere you know something about, somewhere about which you are aware.- but nobody seemed to know what was actually going on. It sounded pretty fecked up, though, and as soon as i got ^there i rushed in and put the telly on...

I had a deep foreboding - this was the dawning of the rest of our lives... on

Last one...

No song reminds me of here , but there was one you haven't heard for ages.

It must've been a year or two after Concorde had been grounded after the Paris incident - this house was proper under the Heathrow flight path, though they had gained quite a lot of height by the time they reached me, so you sort of 'zoned out' of the noise after a surprisingly short while - and i was not long awake.

There was a noise. It grew and grew. It was, as it grew closer, an out-of-the-ordinary kind of noise. Closer still, the noise was really quite extraordinary, and the house itself actually trembled.

I WTF!'ed out of bed and to the window, just as that unmistakable profile slid out of view.

You haven't heard this for ages, and are unlikely to do so again.
