Local Circular Walking Routes

Anyone know any good ones for the local / semi local / on the chase?

Or good guides?

We tried to follow one earlier in Eccleshall but got a little lost as it might have been have been a little outdated - although we did come across a pretty church in Elenhall so not a total loss of a walk.

Love these, thanks for posting and well done to the Lewis partnership. Really like the consideration regards stiles on the walks, and them identifying how many there is to negotiate. When I lost my old greyhound my one stipulation for our next dog was that it was small enough for me to lift over stiles. Rescued a wonderful puppy that the rescue expected to grow to just about whippet size or slightly bigger. but he grew and grew and grew, and is now bigger than our old dog!!! It's the nature of rescue dogs I know, he's genuinely a dog that was thrown out and found in the rubbish, so no-one knows his origins, and we love him nonetheless, but negotiating stiles is a nightmare!!! He's 25kg of bone and muscle and way too heavy for me!

Nice local one for you in particular, if you haven't done it already -

Go to here -> follow river to comical bridge -> cross actual bridge -> then plot course via the Stafford Riverway Link to the canal -> turn right and follow towpath to here -> turn right onto the long bridge, under the railway line and back to here.

Apropos your OP @Wormella , do they need to be pushchair friendly? Cause that one isn't particularly, but i could probably think of some more that are.

When I lived in Baswich in the 70s, that was my route to/from The Prince of Wales, due to the lack of a competitive edge from The Crossbow...

..although, I used to carry on to the bend after the canal bridge and go up Baswich Lane from there..

Somehow, I managed it a great many times - unscathed.

We did this one this morning, took about 1.5 hours and was rather pleasant. Very muddy, so proper boots needed, flat, and a nice mix of lanes, fields and a little bit of woodland. Dog got a nice run too. Personally I'm against killing any animal for sport so find the pheasant feeders and shooting that occurs here abhorrent, but that's not the Red Lion/Lewis partnerships fault, and I did enjoy the exercise.

As an aside, I have a whole load of walking leaflets created by Stafford Borough Council in the late 1980's early 90's. These are all circulars. If anyone is interested I'll scan them in and upload? The originals are poorly copied photocopies, but I can give it a try as they go a little off the beaten track to places I'd never heard of!! Chatcull, croxton, Copmere, back end of Gnosall amongst others. All around 5 miles long and usually starting and ending at a pub!!

Another nice Chase one if you can get yourself here.

Go through the gate to the pond ('ducks' - bring bread) -> follow the obvious path from the hide up and then to the right, over another unnecessary bridge, up a very 'rooty' bit to here -> take the left at that fork - it's one of those ones that doesn't look quite right to begin with but widens into obviousness quite quickly - and proceed sort of about half way up the valley you are in to here -> it's the first obvious opportunity to turn left and you are definitely in the valley rather than half way up it, turn left ->

Now one of two things will happen - ideally you will notice the next path to your left which will take you down this path that is slightly obscured from above because it meanders between the trees that occupy the middle of this picture, or you will miss it and gain height to this more obvious path that occupies the middle of this picture

Either of these outcomes leads us to the same ending...

-> the 1st ends up here, the 2nd requires a very downwards left here and brings you out at the same place.

Are there any local walking groups that aren't populated by anti-dog pensioners locally? I've loked at the local ramblers and dogs seem to be very unwelcome, which completely defeats the point of walking to me. They also look rather blue-rinse, and while I love pensioners, I'm not sure I have much in common with them. Do local people in their 30s and 40's not walk socially with their dogs? :(

One of the problems we found - trying to follow routes suggested by Eccleshall council is that they were quite out of date - some markers have gone, what was a field in 2011 is now a building site etc

I've avoided this by buying the relevant O/S map. If you're walking locally it's a worthwhile one time purchase and then it's easy to clarify footpaths and urban development since the walk was created. Although Stafford is near the edge of one sheet so may be worth buying the next sheet as well. Still, less than £20 to prevent footpath disasters is value for money imo!!
