Stafford shops closing - Turning into a ghost town?

The thing I don't get is every single major store closing down, no matter if it's here or in the states, uses that exact same signage these days. Guy must have made a killing xD.

Didn't even know they existed.

Been there over three years after being in the Market. Perhaps if the good people of Stafford would actually use the small independents they would still be there - but then the public wouldn't be able to moan about shops closing. Use them or lose them has been the mantra for years. It would seem Staffordians couldn't give a toss and most of the interesting and valuable shops in the town probably survive purely on tourists who stumble on them after realising the Town Centre is so dire- locals walk the High Street then go to "out of town".

Enjoying a drop of red.

If you don't know they exist, how can you use them.

The problem was very much theirs, not mine.

Ive been a fairly frequent visitor to St Mary's due to the uniform shop being there and formerly Unique Soles for school shoes, and my hairdressers being around the corner, and also have no recollection of an opticians (presumably?!) being there.

Familiarity breeds contempt so they say and I think this is the case with Stafford. Locals stick to their routes and never explore or even look up from their phones while walking so unless a major store with a massive marketing budget comes in, it is missed. Small independents cannot afford a marketing budget, if they put an A board out the Council (used to) hammer them. They rely instead on word of mouth and decent service but that puts them in a catch 22 situation with locals. I think the message is "explore away from the High Street". I met one chap a couple of months ago who had lived in Stafford for over twenty years yet couldn't even tell a friend where "the thatched fruit and veg shop" was.

The Eye Works has been referred to a few times on here - and I planned to attend in the next few days, in my quest to find a decent optician again...

Wow, it is right next door to the uniform shop, and used to have three A boards starting outside The Bear. For the record they did free eye tests and the frames were both better quality and much cheaper than both Specsavers or Boots. Opening hours have been a bit hit and miss lately which is now understandable perhaps.
Does make me wonder how many people are not aware of that Mill Street/St Marys area, all small independents hoping for a good Christmas no doubt.- 89 days of worry to go for most of them I fear.

I go to St Mary's Mews or past it several times a week and have never seen it.

Must go to Specsavers.
Just squint a bit.
