Policing two ends of the high street ?

Nope

The local authorities are confused enough as it is thanks to confusing central government policy

Bringing housing into the centre of towns is one thing, then allowing bars to open until the early hours ? WTF is that all about then

I'm sure the Martin Street apartments owner is delighted with the live music blaring out of the first floor window of the DogHouse

I like live music, i like martin street, but it's a cockup

Gated communities, it's the future

( it's called prison )

Ay , he talk b*******

I'd be interested to hear which part of this you deem to be balls, because it is clear that this has actually been Staffs Police policy for probably more than a decade now - it put paid to at least one of the landlords of the Bird who was told in no uncertain terms that he would not be given a licence to have live music events beyond 12am because basically feck you - you're not in the part of town that we're going to actually police.

The late evening economy of Stafford is almost entirely dictated by the methodology of those that plan to police it, so it has been constricted within a tight triangle - Casa/Top Of/Grapes. It's not just some sort of coincidence that they're all bunched together, they are there because the Police have corralled them there by actively abandoning the rest of the town.

It's not like this is not obvious.

The Surgery - Redrum - has managed to buck the trend, i'd be interested to hear how.

Virtually no trouble, it's hard for the police to refuse you if they never need to be there. Although not sure about getting the license in the first place?
When the PandA Man put furniture out in the street in the evening, on the first night some coppers came and stood by the corner door of the Co-op, after ten minutes they decided that - A, There was no actual problem, & B, They were heavily outnumbered.

My understanding is that the police can object to new licenses but they have an extremely hard time denying established licenses. Redrum is in a bar that's had an established late night music license forever - everything else north end except Reynold's has historically been 11pm hasn't it?

I'm sure they'd be delighted to shut down Redrum if they could. They don't actually care about trouble - I'm certain that corralling everyone into that small area makes things worse.

I think the Surgery/PandA opened early 2000s didn't it, so not quite forever?

If I remember correctly didn't the original Yates have an after 23.00 licence and not forgetting good ole Props back in the day.

I do agree that it seems Police now want to herd everyone to one confined end of the town and that definitely does make things a lot worse.

Surgery was a bar before then wasn't it? Dad tells me it was the Noah's Ark Inn when he was a student...

Yeah, Noah's Ark goes back to the 1500s, but few people around now will have drunk in it before the Surgery days - closed in the '60s, I believe and was a storage/office facility for a few years.

As mentioned by others that the police are rarely successful in preventing establishments gaining licenses outright. You only have to look at the licenses given out to businesses north of Macdonald`s in very recent years: Butlers Bell, Redrum, No7, The Doghouse, Slaters and Hogarths. This will only expand as will conditions, this is because demand will control licenses not the police.

Secondly, in reference regarding the dog house and Martin Street residences, there is really no issue.

1. Is anyone actually living in Martin Street ? 2. Drinking / music establishments have co-existed in towns and cities or an eternity.

2. One only has to go to any major city to see the extent of living, leisure, tourism, restaurants, late night premises all thriving along side enormous scales of city centre living. So why shouldn't this happen in town centres, albeit on a far smaller scale ?

Town centre living is a must in todays environment and is something required for them to continue existing. Centres, planners and locals need to look forward and not be in the dark ages hoping retail will find its mojo again.
