Of course, the ballroom was named after the wartime project, not the borough in New York.

Hence the Bouncer's typical quote taken from the Bhagavad Gita when you were getting thrown out: 'Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.'

Although the booze did a pretty good job of doing that as well … :pint:

I always thought a far better quote came from physicist Kenneth Bainbridge who was the Trinity Test Site Director. (Had the bomb failed to explode, he had the unenviable job of going out and climbing the tower to find out why.)

As they watched it explode from the bunker, he turned to the rest and said: "Now we're all sons of bitches."

Really?
I thought he said;

'You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off'!.....

Must pay the Ancient High House a visit again soon, not been for a while. Retail visited exhibition will be especially interesting remembering everything from when I was a kid in the late 50's , and the saturday afternoon visits to Jenkinsons in my teens after the Grapes had called "last orders" at 2.30pm / 3pm

I can remember taking this picture but not sure of the year, it is decades ago though. Taken from the bottom of the Crinoline Railway Footbridge looking south toward the Exeter Street prefabs, now long gone. I was watching these two in hope of picking up some chat up lines …

The prefabs are still there, albeit clad in faux brick work. Well, most of the ones that weren't bought privately, that is.

I used to walk down the footpath, past those prefabs ,from Wolverhampton rd to Exeter street area ,and come out at Silkmore lane ( down the side of the bus depot or BRC whichever it was...)
Once rescued a Golden Labrador which was hanging by its collar from one of the metal spikes on the railings (well..had to run to one of the nearby houses as I couldn't lift him clear by myself). Don't know whether someone had hung him there, or if he had gone to jump over and got strung up...
Remember a scout hut down that alleyway as well.

Was Wagsport where the phone repair shop is under the High House? or was it down the far end in the Sheridan center adjacent to Roy Townsend's (for the record, Roy Townsend was one of the nicest bosses ever! great family too to work for. was a sad day when he passed away)

Wagsports was situated in the far left corner (as you look at it) of Home Bargains, where it meets up with the former Argos. I don't think it was next door, but Halpin's (men's clothing) once occupied the far right side of where Home Bargains currently is.

There are a few photos on Staffordshire Past Track that show previous shops there during the mid '70s, but none from the '80s, oddly enough.

The other shop that was part of the Ancient High House was Sportsco. Stepping down to the trainer department,I used to drool over their selection of Adidas Samba and Gazelle. I could only afford Diadora.

Talking of nostalgia, whatever happened to MISS T who started this thread? He / she used to be prolific poster and then disappeared in 2013. Unless they had a name change?

I worked in Midland Lighting which was situated in The Sheridan Centre where the right side of Home Bargain is now (looking at shop)
That must have been 83/84, before I left to sell the new fangled personal stereos.

I still run the wall-lights that I had from there, like these, but all white, two singles and a twin. I have replaced the triple pendant, though, but it is retained for potential future use.
