Recycling changes...

I'm ok with the blue bag but how backward it is to no longer collect drinks cartons. This makes up most of our cardboard recycling. This council is so backward.

Anyone know where we can take our oat milk cartons now please?

Is Tranquility still open? They recycle most things? (by shoe shed)

Bin men ignored my extra cardboard this week, anyone else have this?
Yes a person a few doors down (who had a habit of putting his crap in other people's bins) had a large amount of cardboard by his wheelie bin (not in the bag) and it wasn't collected....

It's not backward if what was being collected wasn't being recycled, or even shipped off elsewhere.

Tranquility...
Needed - small boxes all packing from any online orders.
(Newport Road Next to the Shoe Shed)

Im struggling to tear the thicker cardboard up with my arthritic hands. Tried cutting up the big box my veg delivery came in with a Stanley knife and nearly sliced my hand off..

Just marrying up one post with another.

No need to try and squash those boxes up when someone else can be making use of them.

Thanks @Carole.

These have had veg etc in and not the normal packaging boxes that fold over and close up. More more like massively large thick trays with about 9" sides and about 2-3 ft long(and got my name plastered all over them in ink for delivery). Not sure whether the sort of boxes they'd need ???

Hubby used to take any packaging and fillings to his work for his warehouse to re-use , but that works has gone now.

How do I edit this?
Important question - are those shiny-on-the-inside food packets "food wrap" or "foil"? Trying to work out if they should be in the green bin or the recycling...

It looks like they are green bin stuff.

here are some items that you can no longer put in the blue bin, the following should now all be put in the green bin:

  • Carrier or plastic bags
  • Crisp bags and sweet wrappers
  • Cellophane and food wrapping
  • Waxed cartons eg Fruit juice or long life milk
  • Black plastic trays
  • Hard plastic – toys, buckets etc
Unless you store them until Roots are able to accept them in the future.

Some of the things that are now going into the green bin ARE recyclable but are more difficult to do. This is probably why Veolia don't want it putting in the blue bin. They probably only want the easy stuff to recycle.

Having said that, I am sure I read on the SBC website that not everything that goes into the green bins ends up in a landfill so make of that what you will.

.
I got the impression that they could use them for their own deliveries so they don’t need to close.
I’m only guessing so I might be barking up the wrong tree.
Perhaps worth a phone call?

I'm expecting another farm delivery tomorrow so going to check with farm first if they could re- use and then I'll give them a call.
(Got my glass milk bottles ready to give back to the butchers when they deliver as well...if they survive being sent rolling around the garage for another day or so... Could do with a bigger house since the office has taken over!)

I know that Birmingham City Council burn a lot of stuff that can be recycled. Used go out with a bloke that worked for a recycling company in Brum. Even hospital waste that is meant to be landfill was burnt.

I had an interesting walk around the estate midday this morning.

We have our blue bin and bag collected around 8:00am every Thursday, and I guess most Thursdays, they'd all have been emptied by now. But today there were a lot of bags out presumably by people who'd forgotten about the Bank Holiday and that it was being collected a day later than normal.

Given how full a lot of the blue bags were, I think we must be doing something wrong, as ours will only ever be about 1/4 full most weeks. OK there is only two of us and we don't have newspapers, but even so.

We keep ours until its full, then put it out, absolutely no point in the poor bin men having to handle it for a few items.

Good point. The hopper was usually half-full, so I'd got into the routine of putting both out together (or not). Maybe I should think about sometimes only putting the bin out.
