The brighter side of lockdown

I used my satnav for the first time since lockdown today.

I only went to Chasewater but I couldn’t remember how to get to the car park on the far side away from the crowds.

Saw these two wandering around the woodland and before walking around to the busy side of the reservoir for a coffee.

One of the brighter things of lockdown for me is a trivial little thing, but I've actually got to know my own face.

Most men and some women won't identify with this, but others will.

Since the 80's when I joined BA I had to wear make up for work. We had to be fully made up.
This wasn't a problem for me, I was in my 20's then so I was happy to wear makeup on and off duty.

So over the ensuing years it became habitual.
Get up, get showered, get dressed, put makeup on.

And I felt bare without make up, especially as I got older.

Then lockdown.
No point in wearing makeup, so I didn't.
But then when I did decide to venture out to buy a few groceries I couldn't be bothered to make the effort.

And actually, nobody has recoiled in horror at my bare face, I've been treated in exactly the same way.

I've looked in the mirror tonight and thought
"Do you know what Babe, you're just fine the way you are"

We've just done an online quiz with some friends for the 16th week in a row. There were a few I didn't know at the start (we're good friends with the hosts) but I reckon we have new friends for life now.

I'm inspired @Carole ... I'm never going to wash again. :P

Today I finally got the course record for running the last 1k up the Stone Road, something I've been edging towards for a month or so now. Considering I've been running for under 18 months and had over 6 months off with injury (3 of those at Christmas) I'm really happy with myself. I'd not run since school, so for someone fast approaching mid 40s I see this as an achievement, and one I credit to the extra time lockdown has given me to run.

Also took 23 seconds off my 5k, now below 19 minutes! May aim was 20 by the end of the year, so very happy. Going to start focusing on longer distances again now, which I said a month ago but that CR beckoned....

This may interest you. It's about a chap who was bumming round the US when a bloke decided that 'you look like a runner', and bribed him to run a mile for $50. This resulted in a time of about 4:32, I think - eventually leading to the Olympics.

I notice on the news lately Kim Collison broke the infamous Lakeland Peaks record.

In the 70's I was in Fort William with my Old Man on the day of the Ben Nevis run. This race is is about 9 miles from Fort William to the summit and back, and that's with 4000 feet of ascent. A famous fell runner at the time, Joss Naylor, came sixth in the race. We were in a pub after the race and my Old Man mentioned to one of the runners that he thought Joss Naylor might have done better ... (personally I figured sixth was pretty good considering) ... and he received the reply: "No, Joss isn't a sprinter. Had there been three or four Ben Nevis's in a row, he'd probably have pissed it."

I decided to have another pint on the strength of that.

Fort William, has one of my favourite pubs, the Grog and Gruel. Spent many a happy hour in there.

So my lockdown has ended, I'm now back at work :(

I've certainly enjoyed my time off though. I spent half of August in Wales wandering up and down mountains, I've seen wildlife and sunrises, took thousands of pictures, and improved my running dramatically (finally under 40 mins for a 10k, and 90 for a half marathon). OK, I lost a lot of wages, but I'd do it all again!

I wouldn't have minded losing 20% of my wages spending half of August in Wales wandering up and down mountains, seeing wildlife and sunrises, taken thousands of pictures... I feel for you.

I've loved it! Also got a new gf this year, she moved in before it all kicked off, so yeah it's been good. I even managed to save a few grand towards my mortgage as I expected to lose my job, it's amazing how between that and pubs being closed you become acutely aware of your spending!

Luckily my job reappeared, just as I'd lost all hope. I know others who'd happily have worked through the summer if they'd got yo stay employed but it wasn't to be :(
