(The sort of joke that Cryptologists enjoy.) :P
A dog walks into a post office and says to the Postmaster “I need to send a telegram.”
The Postmaster says “OK, what is it?”
The dog says “I need it to say, Woof woof woof woof woof woof woof.”
The Postmaster counts the words and says “Well, for the same price, I can put 3 more 'woofs' in for you.”
The dog looks at him and says “But then it wouldn’t make any sense.”

I remember the arguments about the first year of the millennium. Zero can be troublesome it seems, although we'd have a hard time without it.

Then there was the millennium bug, which if I remember in 60's parlance would be described as a 'non-happening.'

Personally if four digits roll over that's good enough for me. Whether there was a year zero or not is old news.

Or was 2001 the first year of this century ?
If it was, that would make 2021 the 21st year.

Indeed, it is the view of most people who've thought about it that 2001 was the first year of this century, there not being a year 0 AD.

Or the 0 BC that would also have been necessary, if that was the case.

Presumably, it was felt to be 'easier' to celebrate the new millennium in the wrong year, to avoid having to explain it?

There was the same discussion at the beginning of the 20th century, for that one they opted for the correct 1901

I can't remember the beginning of the 20th century but I'll take your word for it !!

Given the calendar changes that were made over the centuries, and the fact there is still no certainty as to the exact start date (birth of Jesus) it's not something worth worrying about.
It's all a bit screwed up by the fact that a complete Earth orbit isn't an exact number of days as well. Leap years are a good fix, but there's still a small time creep in the calendar year.

Four digit rollovers however only occur every 1000 years, and there's only ever been one. 1999 to 2000. (You can't count 999 to 1000 as a four digit rollover unless you stick in a leading 0 and that's cheating, and anything BC doesn't count because much of that history is myth and legend and bad maths. Poor old Hippasus found that out. :P)

So, in order to justify a good piss up at the millennium, I'm going with the four digit rollover. (Although I wont deny any old excuse for a good piss up is OK with me.) :pint::pint::heyhey:
