Keto.

I'm thinking of having a go at the Keto diet, my sister in law has talked me into doing it with her.

I'm very aware that carbs are my downfall so I'm hoping to see results, I am partial to an avocado but I'm just not sure I can live without spreading it on toast.

That being said after gaining when I finally quit smoking (almost at 2 years smoke free) followed by a year of lockdown and comfort eating I've never been more in need of getting my (larger than I would like it to be) arss in gear - I figure anything is worth a try!

Has anyone seriously had a go at this and seen results? It's sold as a lifestyle adjustment rather than a fad diet but I'm going to need some convincing.

From what I can see it's just a calorie deficit, and you can do that and still eat carbs. I use My Fitness Pal and have lost a lot of weight through that and a bit more exercise.

@Bob

Well done on stopping smoking!

A friend of mine did Keto but it didn’t last very long, it’s just such an unhealthy way to lose weight.
She got tired, had headaches, lost concentration and was constipated.
Long term effects include high cholesterol, fatty liver and kidney stones....just not worth it to lose a few pounds.

I agree with @Lucy just control the calories. That way you can eat healthily by reducing certain items but still have the odd treat which is much more sustainable in the long term.

The EL GOYA diet has probably been the most successful of all for weight reduction since time immemorial.

Eat Less, Get Of Your Arse.

My friend does keto for about 6 months every year before she goes on holiday to Disney, so she can stuff herself every day for the 3 weeks she's there!

Anyhow, Avacados seem to be on the good list.

Here are some healthy foods to eat on a ketogenic diet.
  • Seafood. Fish and shellfish are very keto-friendly foods. ...
  • Low-carb vegetables. ...

Those foods that you've mentioned aren't specifically related to a Keto diet because Keto is as much about what you CANT eat as what you can.

Foods to avoid on Keto

All grains, pasta, bread, beans, lentils, corn, potatoes, quite a lot of fruit and certain vegetables, milk and pastries.

I personally think that any diet that limits the amount of fruit and veg and doesn't allow beans and lentils (all good for heart health) is faddy and harmful.

There are much much healthier ways of shedding the pounds.

The Keto diet was originally for people suffering from epilepsy and can be quite dangerous for certain people (e.g. diabetics).

Surely it's easier to just eat loads of fruit and veg, fill up on beans and legumes, cut out the calorific snacks and takeaways, ditch the pies, eat sensibility throughout the week and treat yourself at the weekend without going mad?

Ahh, I don't really know much about it, all I know is friend seems to mostly eat chicken, microwave rice and fruit & veg. She's very grumpy whilst doing it, and all so she can eat all the Disney resort meals! She also does an immemcw amount at the gym, walking, spinning, exercising etc....

The more I read the less I’m convinced.

I think as a basis it’s a good plan, just goes a bit too far for me.

This I could cope with as a basis for a meal plan.

I had a sixth form student who followed Keto RELIGIOUSLY - it made him very very ill and I had to get student services involved to speak to his parents.

He was lethargic, death pale, struggled to concentrate and it gave him terribly dry skin.

Anything that encourages you to cut out fruit, vegetables and grains is plain bonkers!

OK do I decided to have a go at this - I'm following it about 85% no pasta or bread, lots of salads and eggs and fish and avacado. I've had an odd spoonful of rice, handful of baby potatoes from the garden, bottle of budwiser if I've wanted to but on the whole it seems to be working, mostly Keto with a bit of the Mediterranean diet thrown in along with an odd treat. Combining with a bit more exercise too, nothing exceptional I bought myself a step machine (which after a few minutes really highlights my lack of fitness) but mostly just a bit more walking.

I've go to say that it seems to be agreeing with me, I've lost a noticeable (to other people) amount or weight and I feel better than I have done in a long while.
