Kemley House Plans.

I'm curious/amazed that this didn't raise the interest of anybody after 166 views?
Are we a town that's now happy with an increasing monstrosity people as they enter our town from the station. The view of our beautiful park straight ahead of you while a glance to the left gives you a 7 storey concrete block that will be as imposing as anything in the town?
I find that very odd! It's only showing 5 comments so I assume they are objections and in that case it could pass without even a whimper.

It's already been discussed on another thread.
The "Stafford shops opening, boom town" thread.

I did try to suggest a better plan for the building but it was declined…

Something about 1-tonne warheads being detrimental to neighbouring buildings, seems they’re not feeling very ambitious really.

As per my point above, if they submit it and nobody objects these tings can sail through so the links are there for people to have their say.

Hopefully, the plans also include a massive improvement to the external appearance because its an ugly building.

I don't think SBC have a tall building policy - some councils do - however the council could still refuse the height.

Found out something interesting today. There was a change in the Planning Regs. last year & you can now add two-floors to residential buildings under Permitted Development. At least the developers have been upfront about wanting to add the additional floors to Kemley House. If the Council approve the change of use to residential then they could have just added them on without requiring Planning Permission anyway.

Only if it’s never had stories added and was built after 1948 mind you. I haven’t been here long enough to know if either of those rules apply

I am however now wondering how our house would look if it was 4 stories tall

It was built around 1970/71-ish.

Nothing much has been added to enhance its original glory.

That picture is from 1972, recording the destruction of the Station Hotel, but showing the completed Kemley House on the right.

I believe the original function was as a Tax Office, though various arms of the state apparatus have been housed there over the last fifty tears.

There is a good article on the BBC News website today which is where I heard about the change. There are some nightmare tales on there about people who purchased top floor apartments years ago who have now had two floors added above them by the freeholder. This has then significantly devalued their property & they couldn't even object as it is Permitted Development!.

I'm intrigued, does this apply to all housing? I could double the height of my house?

I mean, I doubt I could, it'd probably fall apart, but the idea is interesting.
There will be Building Regulation matters to consider.

Sometimes, people try to go downwards - it's not always successful.

Plans have been rejected for a change to residential use, after initially saying it was ok, on the grounds that it'd be too close to the railway station and car garage so the noise would be unacceptable for the residents.

Even though, there's residential units directly behind it ? :strange::shifty:
