Varies by car, but around 60kWh is fairly common and would be £24.

Of course you’re very unlikely to do a full charge on a battery that size unless you’re doing a long journey. Otherwise you’d charge at home, work, etc
The 2 X chargers on the Hough are now operational... It's 40p per kW....

Do we have confirmation on what kind of chargers they are? Fast or rapid?

(you’ll know if they’re rapid because the cables will be insanely thick and attached to a very big box)

They're 50kw Instavolt chargers.

So just as expensive as running a diesel?
For me 40p per kw would represent a 50% saving over running an equivalent petrol powered car.

Most people would only do a partial charge at one of these unless on a long journey and mainly charge at home (I pay 13p per kw to charge at home).

Then you need to factor in the fact you pay much less for maintenance with an EV.

I read that the average EV does about 4 miles per kwh, is that correct? If so for me it's about the same, even with the recent hikes in prices I'm spending about 10p per mile on fuel.

My missus only used to get about 3 mpkwh in her Hyundai. I found I could get 4 and a bit quite easily in my Tesla in the summer and 3.5 to 4 in the winter. Obviously the slower you drive the more economical the car will be, so if you drive round town mainly with a bit of countryside pottering you be much more economical than driving up and down the motorway all day at a speed that doesn't annoy other road users. The same applies to ICE obviously.

We've both been EVless for a couple of months and can't wait to get back into them again next month. Petrol stations really are hideous places to spend time in!

Have you thought about switching to an EV electricity tarriff, such as OVO Drive (6p per kWh)?

Ovo Drive is 14.5 ppkwh according to their website. Besides I should have added that quite a bit of our electricity is generated by solar panels so we don't actually pay anything like 13p most of the time. At work, in fact, all our electricity is self generated for about 10 months of the year so works out even cheaper at point of use.

I don't have an electric car but let's be honest, you wouldn't fully charge your car there in the same way you wouldn't fill up a ICE at a motorway service station...
I also wouldn't fill up on the motorway, I'm a skinflint!

Was just surprised at the cost, morrisons is 30p I didn't realise they varied so much.

Supermarket chargers can often be cheaper as they are subsidised, in the same way supermarkets subsidise their petrol.

It's a split rate, you pay the 'normal' going rate for your domestic electricity, but a special 24 hour a day reduced rate of 6p per kWh for your electric car charger.

Realistically Rapids are your “oh god I’m not getting home on this charge” stops, as they dump a load of DC straight into your battery very quickly. Had to use one in a pinch in Cannock and had 60% back in 15 minutes on my Leaf. They’re mostly expensive to use because they’re pretty damn big bits of kit with active cooling and such… so expensive to install too. Whereas a fast charger is basically just chucking a high current of 230V AC at your car and your car handles actually turning it into DC for the battery… fast chargers are generally quite compact internally and most of what you see is to make it robust rather than because it’s needed. These are generally ones you use at hotels, longer stay shopping centres, etc…

Basically rapids you pay for the convenience because you really really need it. A fast chargers you generally won’t pay as much for, and can sometimes get them on subscription plans (Polar Plus) if you use them a lot.

Mostly it’s us plebs with small batteries that need either of them unless on a long trip, if I was driving around in a Model 3 I’d basically never plug it in away from home.

Thoughts and prayers to you during this difficult time. Can’t imagine going back
