Mad Cat Woman
A Dogs Tale.

“Today I adopted a human. It broke my heart to see him so lonely and confused. And suddenly I got his teary eyes to meet mine. I don't like the smell of sadness. I wanted to jump on him so bad. He spoke to me with cuteness and I knew it, I had to rescue him! that human needed me. So I bark with all my strength, I followed him for blocks and blocks.
I got close, I could smell his hands. The human smiled for an instant and when he took me in his arms, I started to feel his ice cream heart warmed. I approached his cheeks and felt a tear roll on them. I looked at him deeply and his response was a brilliant smile. I jumped excited into his arms, I promised to behave, love him forever, and never part with his side.
How lucky he was to go through that block, down that street and I feel lucky too.
There were so many people walking around and no one was looking at me. All worried, all in their troubles. Glad no one else chose me Today I saved a life. Today I adopted a human”

Forgot to say, both mine have kennel cough. Mango went down first, Ollie a few days later. Vet says it's rife at the moment, Mango will have caught it off a dog she greeted on the field as she's really social then given it to Ollie. They can get better on their own but I'd rather do what I can, so am nearly £200 lighter for it, but thats just something you accept when you have a dog.

Just cooked some rather nice sausages, 2 were saved for later. Heard a crash, Mango comes running past looking proud as feck with sausage held high! Ollie just gave me a look, so I gave him the other one.

She's learnt that from her Dad!!!

Didn't you do something similar the last time we did a BBQ at the bikes or was it at the Turkish :)

The aggression has returned. No idea whats up with him, walking them tonight and ollie approached some people then bit their dog. I can't tell what triggered him, it was getting dark and maybe he didn't see her properly, but he approached her and he started it. He broke the skin, she's at the vets now, just waiting to hear back on how she is.

I'm gutted, no idea what to with him. Going to contact a behaviourist type person tomorrow.

My advice would be to muzzle him when out. He only needs to be aggressive to the wrong dog and the owner could get him put down as a dangerous dog. Muzzling him not only shows you are taking responsibility but prevents injury to other dogs. The basket type muzzles are the best

Yeah, we have a strap muzzle but will get something better. Even with a muzzle though I can't let him off lead now, he was attacked by a muzzled dog when a pup and whilst no physical damage was done it still scared the crap out of him and he wasn't the same for a long time.

He's got so much energy it's going to be hard to keep him occupied, guess I need to start running again.

Secure field or fields with no other dogs would work. I used to own a dog who bit strangers so if I can help send me a message :)

Thanks, I appreciate it. The other dog has 2 punctures on her bum and a scratched paw, hasn't had stitches but the out of hours vet said to go back to the normal vet this morning and see what they recommend. Poor thing :(

Just wish I knew what had happened, he's normally such a friendly docile dog, but he pushed a puppy to the floor last week too and held it's leg. And the weird thing is straight after doing it he's like nothing happened, wanting to play. I know things are a bit unsettled at the moment with us travelling back and forth and my wife/son are still away but in the house he's still his usual clingy over sensitive self. He plays with other dogs when out, runs around with them, his only issue is if another dog tries to take his ball but even then he just looks sad and follows them about. This is so unlike him, and this time specifically he approached them and it's a female which completely reverses any trends we thought we'd ever seen in his behaviour (previously always been less happy with uncastrated males). My only thought is the other dog, being black and it being night, spooked him when he realised it was there as he was going to the owners to play. Thats no excuse though, plus I'd seen her and his eyes should be way better than mine.

I dunno, taking him down to penparc at lunch to get a muzzle.

I think the start is to make sure other dogs are safe, which you are doing, and then try and work out his triggers and why. Holding a puppy down is normal adult dog behaviour. If you watch a pack of dogs the older ones will physically chastise the younger ones to get the correct behaviour. There is nothing wrong with this so long as the adult is well balanced and uses just enough force. It gives puppies lessons on how to behave. Often the issues occur when humans misinterpret this behaviour as aggression. My old boy is quite severe with my young dog in certain situations, if she wakes him up for example, it sounds savage, but his verbal unhappiness in what she has done has taught her not to disturb him when he's sleeping. But he is well balanced and only teaches her the error of her ways!

With your dog it all need a picking apart to work out if he was reacting correctly for the situation or it was unexpected/unnecessary.

Try not to worry, sometimes it's the other dog who isn't balanced or didn't behave correctly but us humans can't read the dog language so miss the signs

Just been in touch with the owner, she's not needing stitches but had anti inflammatories and antibiotics today. Is ok, just sore, poor thing :(

She's also 2 and spayed, so older than Ollie so it's not a puppy thing. He's seriously focussed, so am wondering if he was only looking at the humans and got spooked when he realised the dog was there? Maybe he's just crap at reading other dogs? But then he has some dogs he absolutely loves and goes beserk when he ses them. Whatever biting isn't acceptable and needs to be addressed. The vet have given me a few numbers to try, just called one but no answer and the others are FB pages. I also know someone who trains dogs but not sure this is her area, have sent them a message to see.

So ollie is now always muzzled, and not off lead unless we're sure we're on our own (so mainly the common where we can see). He's not happy but it is what it is, been given a few training techniques just trying to embed them.

I heard of a field nearby with agility equipment in it that you could hire, any ideas?

I think that's a sensible decision to be honest, you wouldn't want him to do any damage to another dog and end up put down.

There is one near Doxey M6 way, or there was before lockdown, and I know Holme from home kennels at Sugnall rent out their massive secure field. My dog goes to this kennel so I can vouch for the kernels and the size of the field, about 20 mins away

+1 for K9 Pastures.
Nice big, secure field available for sole use with good parking for a couple cars. Was £9 for 50 mins +£1 each for extra dogs.
I’m fairly sure there was a video posted somewhere here a few weeks back (poss @gilesjuk )
P. S. There’s no agility equipment there.

Bingo - of sorts - I looked earlier, but didn't find it - "pastures" was the key to success.

But, the video is 'unavailable' now.

Mango is back in the vets, looks like she's eaten something. Pretty sure it's one of her toys, as found some strings of 'fabric' in her sick. Got something constricting her stomach, and a build of poo in her colon and a high temp. Being kept in while they do a full checkup, thank feck for insurance as looking at up to 3k.

Bloods back mostly good, high white cell count and a temperature so likely an infection. Ultrasound and x ray back clear but a gas buildup, usually a sign of a blockage you can't see like stuffing from a toy...

Getting her back at 5, keep home overnight then take back tomorrow morning to assess if surgery needed.
