Guildhall closure?

I used to go to Lincoln by train in the 70s and early 80s - I found it to be a good bit quicker, and a lot cheaper, to cycle to Uttoxeter and catch the train there.
I remember about fifteen years ago when you could get a through train from Uttoxeter to Cleethorpes.
Now can we please get back to discussing the Guildhall closure ?

The issue with trains is the cost.

If there's 2 people going Stafford to Liverpool tomorrow, that's £50+ in tickets (£100+ on the peak services). It's much better to drive!

Did someone mention the Guildhall?

Even just going down to Birmingham New Street is £20 on the weekend now.

How much is the clean air charge + parking?

Like really, i'm genuinely interested how that queers the pitch.

I think that people really need to factor in all of the things that contribute to their journeys - like if you can only park a 10 minute walk from where you want to go, well how different is that to a ten minute wait for the next train?

If you think it's only a few quids worth of petrol but parking is northwards of a tenner, it's not just a few quid is it?

TBF getting to Baswich is always going to be an intractable problem, seeing as whichever way you go it is always uphill...

I was thinking this the other day that its crazy there's no link between Stafford and Uttoxeter. As it is I change at Tamworth for Nottingham and that's opened up a whole range of places I thought were almost impossible to get to by train.

Yeah trains!

In my day, the route was up to Stoke, then waiting an hour for a Crewe-Lincoln train. I realised that I could cycle to Uttoxeter in that sort of time. With a Sturmey-Archer, it did mean walking up Weston Bank on the way back, though.

The last passenger services from Stafford to Uttoxeter ran in 1939, although the line physically survived through the war into the early 50s.

The issue with trains can be the cost.
The train back from Penkridge, after walking there along the canal towpath and getting round the pubs, would be £3.50 for the seven minute journey but booked in advance, which isn't always practical for shopping trips, I got to London for £5.30 in March last year.

The line to Uttoxeter closed before my time.
I change at Stoke ( and a pint in Titanic's bod bar on platform 1 ) for Uttoxeter and it's less than an hour, no longer than the bus.
Was someone saying something about the Guildhall closing ?

Day return £12.40
Out Saturday/back Sunday £18.40
?
Prices certainly have increased since pirateisation of the railways.
For many years I remember off peak and without a railcard Wolverhampton being £2.40 return and Birmingham £4.40 return.

Things were cheaper in the olden days

A few posts under my belt
The lack of communication on the plans for the Guildhall is the worst part. Businesses still in the Guildhall or nearby need to be able to plan for their future. What happens with the Guildhall could greatly impact footfall, up or down. Surely the council must know as you wouldn't buy such a large property if you weren't sure that you could do what you want with it.

Clean air charge for my car - £0.00
Parking right in the Bullring - I usually end up paying £10-£12.
Diesel - 1.5 gallons - round it up to £10.00
Total - £22.00

Going via train
Bus into town - last time I used the bus it was £2.40 one way for one person. So two people, two ways = £9.60
The last time I used a taxi I think it cost me nearly £7 to get from the station to Baswich - £14
Train - going by what people have said above - anywhere from £12.50 each - £25.00 to £20.00 each - £40.00
Total £34.60 or £49.60 using the bus or £39.00 or £54.00 using a taxi.
