People think the same about black dogs.... Have you never heard about the 'Black dog of depression'? (It often follows me around) . Humans stereotype black animals because of this. However black animals are the best ever!

Superstition and mental health are powerful things.

Weird - next thing, people will be thinking bats are, er, batty?

They're gorgeous.

Am I reading it the right way round, that Annie has only arrived in August? If so this is a really short amount of time to adapt to her new life relatively speaking. If she spent about 4 years on the streets in Romania it's going to take a long time to get destress and adapt to English life! I think it takes years and then one day you realise how far they've come. Ex racing greyhounds often don't understand playing, I mean why would they, no one has ever played with them. I guess if you are struggling to survive in Romania that playing is the last thing that occurs to the dogs. Give her time!

Argh, the digging! This is something my youngster does, drives me mad especially now the garden is so muddy. She gets her muddy feet everywhere, up the doors, walls, all over!
Yes, she came over a while before with the puppies, but then the puppies were taken away & rehomed, it must be so distressing for her. We've seen clips of her happy and wagging her tail so we know she can, but at the moment she's like a sulky teenager who just wants to stay in her room and eat all day.

I can't imagine what a change it must be for her, from living on the streets & protecting however many litters of puppies (I think more than 2 for a 4yr old street dog) she had, as well as finding food for them all, not trusting other dogs or humans, along with numerous injurys that she arrived with. Never having had a chance to play. It's just hard to know how to help her, when she has no interest in anyone or anything. One blessing is that she doesn't dig. She LOVES cosy people beds, of corners of rooms where she feels safe.

Fingers crossed wd can all get through to her in some way & make her life happier.

I think it's normal for bitches to 'lose' their puppies around 8 weeks old when they are homed. I suspect she just hasn't settled and unwound yet from her old life to her lovely new one. She will settle I'm sure, just keep being patient :)

Can cats join in this thread too??!

This is Rune (tabby) and Merlin (grey)

Both rescues from the RSPCA!

We adopted Rune in January and was told he was feral and may never want human interaction. I was just happy to offer a home with outside space (and lots of mice!!) Turns out he's the biggest cuddle-bum ever! He will meow at me until I pick him up and cradle him like a baby! He follows us everywhere and is an absolute gannett!! No food is safe!!

I shared pictures and progress of Rune with the RSPCA and they were so delighted that they called me when Merlin arrived with them. He came from a home with 27 other cats and had been neglected. He adores Rune and is his shadow, they get along brilliantly and never hiss or flight! However he doesn't think much of me!! We've had him since April and only recently have been able to stroke him. He looks at me with pure disgust and seems to ask why I'm in his house...

They are both absolutely super! I really would like another (black girl called Magic!) I'm working on the husband....

Ditto although mine are black and white. I just asked the rescue for 2 kittens that were getting overlooked. Ended up with these beauties, the most lovely natured little guys and they're homers so we actually see a lot of them! My tabbies were always out and then all 3 got run over on that bloody Eccleshall Rd :(

Glad they like to stay at home.:love:

My parents always went for the rescue dogs that were being overlooked.

When we got our dog from Coven, they weren't part of Birmingham dogs home then and dogs were kept for the compulsory 7 days to see if reclaimed. Then depended on if any others needed the kennel pace as to whether they got to hang on a bit longer for a home. :(

We nearly ended up with 2 , I chose Piskie dog ( our name for her) and hubby chose another. We were so worried about the other dog. When we went back to pick Piskie up after her 7 days , my boss said to have the 2nd dog as well if still there and if they didn't get on , he'd have it.

2nd dog had reserved on his cage , so good to his word my boss went the next day and rescued a Springer spaniel from there. He blamed me ever since when he turned up late from work , when pooch Meg had scarpered off over Falmouth Fields and wouldn't come back.for ages..

Met two dogs today. Took home a 2 year old male instead of a female as they seemed to walk better together, Luke is his name and he's never raced.

Some bickering tonight over food and toys but still early days. Going on the greyhound walk from Marquis Drive tomorrow at 11am. Alvin has a bit of a limp though, so may need a vet trip this coming week.

Survived the evening, stressful to say the least :) I knew it would be a mad house. Luke is making Alvin seem really well behaved and well adjusted. He just found a foam ball that had been under the sideboard for weeks. He also just tried eating a roll of poop bags and was very growly when I tried to take them away, obviously not good as he could choke.

Awww

Well done for rescuing another.

Hope he settles down quickly too and learns to behave as good as Alvin.

Hope walk has gone well today for. both of them.

When I went to visit a friend who's son was there with his rescue greyhound, I was making a fuss and dog was loving it.
Then when he was in his basket I stroked him to say goodbye. They were on pins as apparently he guarded his basket and went for anyone who approached him in there.
( I like how they forgot to mention that to me beforehand ! ). But he just sat there letting me stroke his head and they were amazed.

Walk today was good. There's a few regulars I know on sight now, had a good chat for an hour, some mince pies and cake. The dogs had sausages and cheese slices. Alvin seems a lot more confident with Luke around. I have to take Alvin to the vets though as he starting limping on Wednesday and it's not really gone away. I think when I first got him I did a long walk (before he started to get so anxious) and it did look like he was limping a bit then. But nothing since. They do suffer with their paws and corns, so I hope its not that as they can be a lifelong thing to manage. I'm putting glucosamine gravy on his food as when they are ex-racers they can have had some joint damage.

Some dogs just like certain people. Perhaps some people look more like dogs than others :D

Sadly the companion thing isn't working out for Alvin, I tried a walk this evening and he wouldn't go. So will be returning Luke as he was on a 2 week trial and I don't want him to settle here and then have to go back on the weekend. Really upsetting as he is the sort of dog I wish Alvin was, good confident walker. But I need to devote all my efforts to Alvin and I will consult a dog behaviour expert for help. Got a lot of work ahead with him.
