Major new road plans are in the pipeline for Stafford following the results of a public consultation. The town centre will benefit from part of £1.8 million pot of cash designed to improve its roads and cycle lanes.
It is hoped the scheme will improve the environment along routes bypassed by the Stafford Western Access Route. It will include better quality footways, safer conditions for pedestrians and cyclists, a cycle network that is easy to navigate, separation of pedestrians, cyclists and traffic, better cycle parking in town and slower traffic speeds
The public were asked their views on the scheme. A total of 81 per cent of people wanted to see secure cycle parking in the town centre and resurfaced and widened pavements. Another improvement high on the wish list was additional cycle lanes on both sides of the road.
Other schemes going forward will be reduce speed in Chell Road, remove barriers/central island opposite Lamb Inn; allow more space for pedestrians/cyclists at Chell Road/Gaol Square; and remove guardrail in Foregate Street
As a result of the consultation, Staffordshire County Council revealed it will be taking all of the above improvements forward to the next phase of delivery by coming up with detailed designs.
Local authorities were invited by central Government to bid for additional money to invest in improving the environment for both walking and cycling. Successful bids needed to include schemes that meaningfully reallocate road space to cyclists and pedestrians.
Local knowledge was used to identify the most promising locations for new cycleways that could be delivered swiftly and would meet government guidelines. Locations prioritised in the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan were also considered, where data indicates there is likely to be the highest levels of cycling.
It is part of £1.8 million proposals to improve footways and cycle routes in parts of Cannock, Stafford, and Newcastle-under-Lyme.

Enjoying a drop of red.
£1.8m, split three ways.

Minus all the fees from the 'experts' and 'professionals' required to draw up plans, probably means the actual amount spent on the roads and cycle ways in Stafford will be about £50k, if that.

"Major new road plans for Stafford" suggested continuing the Eastern Distributor Road from Hydrant Way at least to Weeping Cross but no there's no new road, major or minor, involved at all.
One certainty though is that our MP will claim credit for whatever work is done.

"remove guardrail in Foregate Street", the rail is there to protect the people on the pavement. Why should it be removed because idiots keep driving into it ?

If a guardrail needs removing, it's the one by the garage / McDonald's on the way to Tesco express, you have to walk too far past it at night to cross the road which is a pain when the roads dead.

If the guardrail didn't slow the speeding car down the other day, it would have driven into the fabric / upholstery place on the corner of the Reynolds centre.

Wasn't that weeks ago? I'm sure that guardrail has been missing for weeks/months now.

I completed the consultation on this. The guard rail is to be removed to widen the available space for cyclists and pedestrians. The form asked if you agreed with its removal and I said no. The speed juggernauts fly along there a small kerb stone isn't enough to protect those on the pavement.

Re the Tesco junctions, that dead end road should be a nice safe footpath but in true Stafford style it's a dead end with a wall. No thought for people who walk at all.

Removing the guardrail is going to make a massive difference isn't it. 🤣🤣🙄

Yes, the length of that guardrail is ridiculous hence me walking on the road side of it to and from Holmcroft Surgery.

I’m shocked that a county council so neglectful in its maintenance of the current network is thinking of anything other than pothole repair

Surely you gest, sir. Highways, SCC and SBC have a catalogue of incompetent fcukwittery stretching back decades, that should leave you well prepared, if not quite sanguine, for what is to come.

I opposed the widening of the footpath Chell @ Goal. When they added the temporary covid spacing barriers and narrowed the junction to two lanes for vehicles joining the roundabout from Chell Road it was chaos. It’s also not exactly a piece of pavement that is overflowing with pedestrians meaning it’s unnecessary. Just a classic bit of creeping into making car usage difficult. And I say that as someone who regularly walks into town from the North End.

The dead end road by Tesco is, I think owned by the railways. When a friends car was damaged there it was the Transport Police who ‘investigated’ not the locals. It’s also a useful parking spot for the train station if you’re early enough 😉.

Agreed- I run along chell road most days (and have done for six months) and have only met a handful of pedestrians outside of the crossing to sainsburys. That widening for covid reasons was an absolute nonsense.

But let’s not forget our county council is mad keen on congestion charging. They’ll soon be following the lead of other places to create their perfect taxation storm

How does or how can the A34 and A449 junction be "improved" with £300,000? Other than repainting the white lines & maybe getting rid of the yellow box markings? Or is it something more substantial like demolishing some buildings & creating a burger roundabout?
