Horses/Circus.

Anyone know the situation with regard to the horses attached to that godawful circus currently on the Common? Bad enough that these poor beasts get ferried from lorry to small stall to the ring to 'entertain' and then back to the lorry or small stall prison, they've now got to deal with enormous temperatures in their makeshift plastic stables. Heaven knows if the circus will expect them to perform in these conditions as well. Is there anything that can be done to save this suffering in this upcoming heat?

I see them daily, not sure how theyre being treated differently from other horses. They probany 'work' for about 20 mins at the most... The same as the doggys.... Rspca of you feel so inclined.

No access to any aspects of normal horse behaviour? No grazing, the rain on their backs, sun when not a heatwave, the chance to just be a horse. It doesn't occur to you to realise that apart from the 20 mins in the ring they are in small stalls bored stupid? Or in a van over and over. And in winter what do you think happens to them? It's very different to the life of most horses and systematic cruelty :(

I haven’t been there or seen the horses but…..If you’re concerned about the horses in the heatwave I suggest you make regular checks when the heat becomes an issue, I don’t think it’s fair to judge the care that the animals will receive before it becomes relevant.

It’s easy to make assumptions but the training these animals receive will be extensive and years of time and investment into a relationship between animal and trainer. The horses are likely treated better than some people treat their kids, as with many other ‘working animals’ competition horses, sheep dogs, guide dogs, these animals are often one of a kind and not easily replaceable, it’s not in the interests of the circus to not treat them well.

It's very difficult to get near the stalls as the circus parks a ring of vehicles around them to stop people seeing the reality.
Apart from some training in the ring and 20 mins performing these animals have no other life. Oh yeah plus getting carted round the country in the back of some of the oldest vehicles still on our roads.

It's in the interest of the circus to treat them in the minimum way they can get away with to minimise cost, which is why circuses are routinely criticised for appaling animal welfare practises. Where in the week do these animals get chance to graze, socialise or exhibit other natural behaviours? Animals do not exist for our entertainment.

If you are in doubt about the grim reality then here is actual evidence of the winter quarters these animals are subjected to. Granted it was taken pre the recent law banning wild animals in circuses but I doubt much if anything has changed.

Got any pets?

I’m carrying on as requested
Yes. All are rescued. None are subjected to the stress of being confined in a small space 24/7, constantly driven from pillar to post, and removed from any chance of natural behaviours which for horses is grazing for hours each day with a herd.

@kyoto49 the link you shared is from more than 7 years ago. It isn’t necessarily the current state of affairs.

I haven’t been to this or actually any circus and I have no desire to, I have however spent time around working animals and I’ve always seen trainers treat their animals like their babies. From my experience people don’t tend to work with animals if they don’t actually love and genuinely care for the animals.

I’m not totally naive I know that abuse and mistreatment does happen, if you’re concerned call the RSPCA or maybe go with a couple of big bags of carrots and ask nicely to see the horses because you’re worried about them in the heat, they might say no but they might say yes 🤷🏻‍♀️

It might not be the current state of affairs, although I suspect it is, but it kind of undermines your argument that people who work with animals treat them correctly. They clearly don't :(

I'll have a wonder up and see what I can see.

I don’t understand why everything has to be an argument?

Within the same quote you copied I made a comment about my direct experience relevant to the topic, then went on to say but I know mistreatment does happen! I’m not sure why you felt the need to respond this way.

That’s interesting

I wonder what they eat?

Did they have a fair there?. I was cycling down the Wolverhampton Road this morning & a wagon towing two trailers with a fairground on them nearly knocked me off my bike. Missed me by millimeters, closest I have ever come to being hit!.
