Soooooooo…….

I’m not a happy flyer, last trip on a plane was over a decade ago and in less than a week I have to get on a flight and spend 4 days abroad with work colleagues leaving the hubby and kids at home. I’m getting more and more stressed with each passing minute 😣 is it too late to back out?????? 😅

No. Back out. Life's short. Do what YOU want.

1, Flying is ridiculously OK these days. I flew a good bit in the 60s and 70s, when it was a bit 'exciting' at times, and then again this century when it was far less of an issue than the trips to and from the airport.

2, Don't worry about 'home', the kids will ensure that he doesn't get into any trouble.

3, There is, however, the issue of the tedium of airport arrangements - and the absolute horror of being incarcerated with a load of fellow workers in a sort-of mini-Guantanamo situation...

I used to fly. A lot. In my previous job I was flying to LA or New York and back to blighty sometimes twice a week at one point. I hate flying, hated it then, hate it now.

COVID has at least been useful for one thing. I now know that I never again will get on sealed metal tube at 36000 feet, breathing the same air as hundreds of other people. From now on it's by foot, bike, motorbike, car and Eurotunnel only. If I can't get there by those means, I inna goin'.

I wouldn't be a fan of the whole process, the endless airport procedures and the crazy hanging about, but the actual flying is not the white knuckle, near death experience that it used to be.

A very delicate take-off, in a plane* that barely struggled into the air, having failed to do so a few hours before at the first attempt, then hour after hour of thunderstorms encountered at 18,000 feet, because it had such a leak that it couldn't go any higher and maintain cabin pressure - that put me off for over a decade.

*This is supposed to be it, but it's actually an ex-BOAC one painted up.

Some numbers stick in your head and I'm still not sure if 497 is a lucky number or not.

Yes the airport is the worst, whichever airport is horrible and the endless stupidity of people, both official and traveler at check in and security. Flights are boring and tedious and fellow passengers usually most objectionable.

Mainly it was the frequency though and the fact that some weeks I truly no longer knew where or when I was at times. Jet lag on weekly twice weekly basis is seriously detrimental to health.

I’ve flown before, we holidayed abroad when I was a kid. The older I’ve got…. The more anxious I’ve got.

Covid has helped me turn into a hermit and I’m firmly in the camp of do it by email, I can just about manage a teams call if I absolutely must.

Last flight was only to Amsterdam but it was awful, only a few days after a plane came down at Schipol and it was an awfully rocky flight.

I’ve had no desire since to board a plane, I still have no desire to board a plane but even so I’m going to have to.

Flown all over the world joining and leaving ships and never enjoyed it. Not fear, it's about as safe as it comes, more discomfort and the hassle of airports. Only flight I didn't mind was when working for the Civil Service and had to give a presentation in Fort Meade, Maryland. Flew first class, bypassed all the immigration/customs etc and was provided with a car all at the expense of the US tax payer.
Trouble was the car was left hand drive, everything seemed the wrong way round to me. The drive from Dulles to Fort Meade, now that was scary.

Just little old me:)

Is that one that's on display at Cosford?

I dont fancy flying again , even though we have flown since our previous scare.
We had to divert to Manchester after a flight in front of us diverted to Brum for an emergency landing closed Birmingham minutes before we were due to land .
After circling for ages ,diverted us to Manchester, but then about to run out of fuel ourselves and had an emergency landing of our own ( at least we got a close up look at the Man City FC plane as we had to land near it away from the main runways 😂). Had to get in the brace position and told to leave all possessions behind if we were told to leg it on landing ( I grabbed the house/ car keys as well as passports to take with us

BUT...the even scarier part was the taxi transfers arranged by Jet2 back to brum to collect our car. The taxi driver had been celebrating Eid or something when the call for drivers for the long journeys came. He was p1ssed and doing 100+ down the M6 , on his hand held phone to his mates telling them to get to the airport as some money to be made!
We even did a lap of Knutsford services when he followed the car infront by mistake!
Survived the landing , but the drive down the M6 to collect the car from Brum was the most scariest !

At least since covid , hubby hasn't had to fly to Germany etc with his work (yet)

It's the 'big airport' thing that would annoy me.

Ryanair flies to a few places from this one, much in the style of a small bus station, and it's straight down the railway, with a half mile walk to the terminal from the station - it looks fairly civilised.

The Tesco garage up by Rising Brook had armed police around it earlier with the road blocked off, anyone know what that was about?
