Market Square paving.

Spouting nonsense since the day I learned to talk
Been into town today and the Market Square is a disaster zone. What a complete mess.

Where's walking street taking place in April ? , It's going to be nowhere near finished. Or are they just going to be dotted around ? , Don't know where they'll put the stage though.

Well they stated market square was going to be completed by sept 2023 so you'd think the Walking Street had a plan in place...

Weekly visit to the town center and can't really see anything new with the paving
As I've said, it should have been a 2 week job, 3 at the most. But it hasn't.

It's the ultimate obstacle course - Wipeout style! Underground pipes are now visible, I'm not sure how this helps workers to lay a few bricks?

I’m a project manager and there is no way that the market square job should take 8 months.

The site has decent service drawings and cat scans would have been made before works commenced so why / how it has taken them 5 weeks to soft dig trenches for services is a mystery.

The prelims on that job will be staggering. Poor program, lack of supervision and piss poor project management is causing that job to be a costly mess.

Several of the previously dug trenches have now been turned into a big pit full of gravel, that's about it for this week

In your professional opinion, how long would you expect a job like this should take from the start? I guess my initial 2 week estimation was slightly overhasty 😂. 4 weeks?

I walked past the Market Square this afternoon & it looked as though they were stacking black milk crates within the gaping hole?

It is where they are placing a new tree. Tree was put in this morning and they are adding soil in and around the said "milk crates" which are part of the root protection system.

I couldn't believe it when i saw it this morning. So they pull out trees that were there and replace them with a tree......brilliant

This is a government job, the contractors could easily take 20 months and it'd still be seen as acceptable...
The government are now big advocates of Prince 2 which is a good project management tool to assist in the management of projects.

In my experience of working on government projects Is that they are overly bureaucratic and they employ overpaid cost consultants / advisors who slow down the process and create obstacles by getting bogged down on very minor points which adds costs to the project.

Government generally uses nec contracts which generally don’t impose time penalties if projects over run.
