I'm glad they have closed off the exit slip lane. Its a complete PITA when someone drives up there and tries to butt in the traffic.

It could still be using up the end of year budget. Items can be paid for before the year end and then delivered afterwards.

That is what a slip road is for. To filter the traffic. God help me if it's busy on the motorway as I try to get on and "butt in" whilst your in Lane 1 refusing to assist.

Waste of money and it's all only going to cause more problems. Heard of daft things but them bothering to change this lay out isn't beneficial and it's a joke that our money is spent on making getting onto and out of the estate less simple. Decision made by someone who clearly doesn't live on the estate, if they do live on wildwood then they must enjoy winding themselves up with a daft traffic system. Heading out there's been a filter lane, heading in their is, was working alright so why change it? Yes congestion, so put in a roundabout. Simple.

Roundabouts only really work if there is an equal throughput.

The double at the top of Radford Bank is a perfect case in point - at peak times everybody is trying to get everywhere so there is a sort of roll on roll off effect, 2 go (from town) up the A34 > 2 go from A34 to Baswich Lane/ A513 > 2 go from the A513 into town > 2 go up the A34 (from town) ad nauseam but not ad infinitum, however it never gets too bad there.

I feel for the people who live on (pause while look up what it's called - didn't help a great deal - i've always thought of it as the flood plain but i doubt that would be a very good sales pitch - Ampleforth Drive if that helps) the estate on the Queensville roundabout, if everything is going either this way or that you're stuck for ever.

The same deal would be the case at Wildwood wouldn't it? You'd wait an eternity for someone to break the general flow of traffic?

Mind you, the one noticeable effect of the economic downturn has been the decline in traffic immediately post peak - i don't tend to be about in peak time, is it noticeable at peak as well?

It may be called 'The Meadows'.

Got a friend who lives there, not a fun place to drive when it's busy.

Just come back from a lovely walk to the butchers in Post Office Lane.

They have now chevroned the exit slip road and made it a "proper" junction now.

Not quite sure what this is going to achieve, we shall wait and see.
Was only a matter of time. While some people are idiots pulling out, that won't really change with it being a normal junction. At least when they're pointing in the right direction they can boot it.

Yep a roundabout wouldn't be very good. Coming out of Wildwood you'd obviously have to give way to the right and since the traffic from Cannock to Stafford is a pretty continuous stream at busy times, it wouldn't be very easy to pull onto the roundabout.

What problems is it going to cause? The exit slip arrangement always struck me as poor. Same question as for the slip road going in - was it really working that well? The layout was designed when traffic levels were doubtless a lot lower than they are now.

Not sure you can compare Wildwood to the motorway!!

It's up to the person on the slip road to join in a safe gap, it isn't the responsibility of drivers on the main carriageway to get out of the way.

You would have to give way, the same as you do now. However, all you would need is a single car turning into Wildwood coming from Baswich to stop the flow from Cannock and you can turn right (or left, of course) more easily than now, where the traffic leaving town has no power to stop the traffic coming into town.

Rather a big assumption there.

The Wildwood junction and its slip road is a pain because you get drivers trying to got onto the Cannock Road at the junction and at the end of the slip road therefore causing more problems. One exit will make things easier.

And for your information, I always let people in from junctions if I can. If everyone "zipped" then traffic would flow a lot more freely.

I'm a big fan of zipping, if only more people partook, it eases tempers as well as aiding traffic flow.

The previous road out of Wildwood did cause a few problems when the people waiting in the sliproad didn't go when there was a gap,the cars behind pulled out and then those waiting would then decide'oh,the one's behind have pulled out so it must be safe to do so' and slowly pull out in front of everyone.

Watching this morning, there wasn't many managing to turn left without going over a few feet of the white lines. Maybe they should have made a bit more of a bend, without having the full slip road exit.

I'm actually glad they've filled in the filter road OUT of Wildwood.. I HATE driving along the Cannock road when someone is wanting to come out of Wildwood. There is that moment of slowing down enough so that if they decide to pull out on you/dont see you and pull out it wont cause an accident but not slowing down enough so that they think you are actually letting them out and thus pull out on you and cause an accident. If it's just pull straight out onto the road then there is none of this. We will probably get people "nipping out" then not accelerating now though and forcing you to slow down which can be just as annoying but not as dangerous.
Don't get the filling in of the filter into Wildwood though. I was always taught to do the majority of your slowing down wherever possible out of the main lane of traffic so you don't slow other cars down too much. It was perfect for this and as far as I'm aware never caused any "crossing two lanes of traffic" problems for cars turning right into Wildwood. It's not THAT big of a filter... Cars turning right still had plenty of visibility to see the cars turning left (unless they shouldn't be driving).

Seeing as they came back a few days afterwards to do the exit out of Wildwood marking, I reckon that they might have been meant to do just the exit one in the first place but did the wrong one. The sliproad coming into Wildwood off the Cannock Road caused no problems whatsoever for the last 30 odd years that it has been there, as far as I am aware.

There's no such thing as a bad road though, just bad driving.

It worked for a while, but there's obviously been a drop in driving standards. Sheer volume of traffic changes behaviour too.

HMMMMM!

I pull out of wildwood at least twice a day and i liked the old system. Also in the traffic in the morning the traffic can back up to the wildowwod pub, the slip lane creates extra space for cueing motorists to turn left and also releives congestion for poeple turning right towards cannock. Hesitant people are annoying on the slip road, like Vault girl said... but if those hesitant people are stuck with the new short left turn section with out the slip road... then we're all going to be there a much longer time whilst they histate and faff about.

That said if the traffics bad there i pull into the wildwood, miss it all out, come out the otherside and use the other junction Wildwood Drive.

Whilst were on the subject it still really annoys me that people go down the right hand lane of the cannock road towards the mini round about and then totally under cut everyone... quite dangerous...

Also, i've been absent from this awesome forum for too long... but Henryscat is STILL Picking up traffic/road use debates and totally disagreeing with at least 95% of people! Why?! No one agrees with you!
