Theresa May faces calls to resign following Police cost cutting.

Trouble is...

Like NHS workers the public sympathy toward the police in times of general personal hardship is limited to personal and recent experience

As this personal experience is not one shared by all - at the same moment - there is no momentum for change in 'your' favour

We are all likely to need a hospital or a police officer at some point in our lives but - as a generalisation - the sympathy for conditions, pay, etc etc will be diluted because the need does not arise collectively

If we have a mass outbreak of flu which kills hundreds of thousands we may then get a new impetus of attention on those nurses at the point of crisis and therefore they may get our mass sympathy and support, in turn pushing Government to up thier status - similarly - only if there is a mass threat to public safety and property - last years riots to the power of ten for example - will the attention of the public relate directly to the support sympathy and therefore Government attention and funding

The big problem across all jobs is that the people who are responsible for this mess ie the bankers have got away Scott free.. They are still allowed to make risky decisions and still get the bonus payments. Where as joe public faces job loses, massive pay cuts. A massive dangerous reduction in services. Stafford a&e a perfect example and the loss of police officers will take us back to the 80's where crime and joyriding in particular went up. Not to mention an increase in road deaths.

Yes the police will have to shut up and put up but they will only loose money. The rest of the country will have to put up with crime rising, more ferrel yobs on the streets. Drug dealing openly seen on streets. You waking up to an empty drive or coming home to your possessions missing and tele gone. Sadly the press seem only to have focused on the forthcoming financial hardship and not the overall effect.

All major parties (Labour included) have publicly said that there needs to be cuts in public spending - the difference being that the coalition have actually got the job of trying to do this whilst all Labour offer is moaning from the sidelines about every cut imposed without offering any credible alternative as to how they would go about things differently. Cutting more slowly over an extended period of time isn't a credible alternative as we would end up getting raped by the markets and would finish up like Greece.

Specifically on Policing, I do have some sympathy with May. There needs to be a rationalisation of the Police and huge Police savings could be made - I'll give one really good example, procurement. I see no need for rank and file Police Officers to be prancing up and down the beat in a shiny new BMW 5-Series, it is a total waste of gas guzzling money. Pre Nu-Labour it wasn't this way as the local Police had Allegros or Metros - a latter day version of these should be used, perhaps something like the Ford Fiesta. Absolutely adequate for local Policing and about £30K cheaper than the Beemers.
Also more Police Authorities should share things like Chief Constables who are not front line officers but are more of an organisational figure head. Local Authorities are starting to share Chief Executives so why not the Police? If you tot this and other examples up then significant savings an be made and Mr Police officer can still do with job from his Fiesta or (heaven forbid) his feet or push bike.

Not even if they're almost quick enough to beat a set of rising bollards..?

I work for the force and my biggest gripe is the way those in command continue to tow the party line. ie , despite the cuts and reductions they continue to spout the same old clap trap that front line policing will not suffer and the public will always be protected. absolute bullshit and cheap propaganda. You have a fantastic Police force but they are being run ragged trying to live up to these stupid promises. Moral through the floor and the only promotions seem to be for Chief Inspectors and above. The guys and girls you see in Stafford are a dedicated , professional team who care about what they do, but they are reaching their limits . I have no doubt I will be called to account when someone of rank reads this, but I am beyond caring , Im speaking for those who cant . ..................watch this space
