The Post House in Stafford

Try Earls Restaurant at the college, you need to book well in advance though and they are only open in term time. In the autumn they will have the new restaurant open too, which IIRC overlooks the town park. Costs less than £20 a head for several courses, and the food is top notch.

:D

That's somewhere that I have been meaning to try for ages. I must get round to booking.

Oh, it is certainly worth it. I've had some amazing meals there, especially Burns night. Hell, even a goats cheese starter tasted nice and I hate goats cheese! The staff are also very good, you often forget they are students and are there to learn rather than being paid to serve you. There is a thread around here for it, once they are taking bookings again I shall post the information there. I am looking forward to the new building, should be nice :)

Snapped a voucher up too, came here to let everyone know but saw it was already on.

JM - the Voucher is Sunday to Thursday anyway so should avoid busiest times.

I'm looking forward to finally trying the place after all the discussion...

I finally went for lunch at The Post House today and I was rather impressed!

I've spent an awful lot of time in that building: standing aside my mum when I was a kid; queueing as a spotty adolescent when I was doing my work experience; trying to send stuff in general as an adult. When I heard the old post office was being converted I felt quite sad that the history of such a lovely building might be lost. I think they've done a great job.

Four of us went for lunch today and it was the first time 3 of us had been at all. I'd been eyeing-up the Eggs Benedict for a while, until we decided we'd rather wait until 12pm for the main menu to be available. I did something I can't remember ever having done before...I ordered a salad. Cobb Salad: Chicken, blue cheese, bacon, avocado etc. I was worried it might be a bit skimpy or lettuceful (it is a word), but it was a decent amount of everything. The only problem was that the avocado was about as unripe as I've ever had. It shouldn't be the texture of a raw potato and was the only bad thing in my bowl. Bad show. My friend Ben had the Potted duck...it looked delightful, but it needs a lot more bread than was given. He didn't ask for any extra but you'd have expected a lot more than a couple of slices.

The girlies both had sarnies. They were both well-filled and delicious, and the sarnies weren't bad either!

The main gripe (oh....here we go...) was the service. We were the only ones in there for the first 45 mins, yet the bar staff seemed oblivious to our presence other than when I went to the bar to ask for a teapot refill or to order the food. Each time I went to ask something there were 2 or 3 people standing at the bar, having a chat. Not once did someone pop round to see if we wanted more drinks or to ask if we wanted to order food, even though we'd stated that it was our intention to do both. By the time we left there were 4 others in the entire building, but the staff seemed totally unaware, though they were very nice when at the table.

6/10. The food was good and the decor is great, but why only do 3/4 of what's required. There was a young girl dressed in a tennis outfit standing in the rain out the front. She was giving free coffees (I think) to entice people in. We were already in.

I will go again, but they need to level things out.

Very strange I went last Friday evening and the only thing I couldn't fault (and there was quite a bit wrong) was the service.

My wife went for afternoon tea, (I really have no idea when she started doing afternoon tea, she isnt royal) and she said everything was great but the service was poor.

I went with a colleague on Wednesday and it was excellent. Our waitress was superb - attentive and friendly - and the food was delicious. I went for the very healthy *cough* Deluxe Burger!

We to the Pilar restaurant on Saturday and I couldn't find much to fault the place. The consensus on this forum seems to be that it's on the expensive side for Stafford, I can't really comment on that since I moved away from Stafford 8 years ago but still visit at least one a year.
Where we currently live most of the local gastro pubs charge around the same prices as in the Pilar Restaurant but without the same level of service.

Food wise we had:
Starters
- Smoked Salmon
- Fish cakes
Mains
- Sirloin steak - side order of pepper sauce
- Fillet steak - side order of pepper sauce

1 Glass of wine
1 Peroni

The bill was £67 so came to £74 with tip. I seem to recall this is a comparable amout to what I spent last year for a meal for two in Panache, the indian restaurant on Stone Road.

Overall I would say that the service was good, the place was well decorated and the food was good. I enjoyed the chunky chips, although they are not as good as Heston Blumentals Triple cooked chips.

In some places though the place didn't quite seem finished and I wonder how some of the details in the redecoration process were missed on the snagging. There was a skirting board missing from the passage way between the Pilar Restaurant and the Gents also in the same corridor I noticed some unpainted plastering.

Overall I would say that the I enjoyed the food and experience and felt it was resonable value for money. Most the local pubs and four star hotels where we live use Molton Brown soap in the toilets rather than the cheap immitation which they had in the post house, perhaps the Post House could look at using this as well.

Perhaps not the most challenging dishes to be judged on but a useful review allthesame so thank you

I chose Pastiche given the state of day trading this month - it was surprisingly very good

Went in for lunch today - 2 Club Sandwiches, Bowl of Chips one Coke and a Coffee. Got there at 12.15 and ordered more or less straight away - received food at 12.45 - not ideal when you are on a lunch hour - so had to rush to eat it. Food was well presented - nice chunky chips, but the sandwich was a little tasteless. - £22.00 but with the Stafford discount card down to £15 - so reasonable VFM.

Came to pay - and this always rings alarm bells to me - "Sorry the card machine is broken at the minute - we can only take cash" :strange: That doesn't quite ring true - I'm sure there's more than one machine........ ...

Luckily I had cash with me.
