Stafford - Drowning under a sea of litter

I'm sort of glad that you found that. I was going to head into town in the morning, hunt down Mohawk Pete and then beat the details out of him - shame, really, don't know what to do tomorrow now...

Ben - Thanks for a great contribution towards the thread! I have had a walk out just around my road this morning and collected the "usual" carrier bag of litter. I can easily without having to really try fill a carrier bag every single day just from my road which probably has about 30 houses - makes you think how many hundreds of bin liner fulls there is out there around the town altogether.

Do you have a litter pick in your area organised? If so let me know as I'd like to get involved

Something I saw on the news recently (I think it was in Birmingham but I could be wrong) was a scheme by council street cleaners and volunteer litter pickers who arranged a clear up of the streets and then rather than disposing of the hundreds of bags of rubbish straight away they piled them up for a day or so in the main square so that people had to look at them and be rightly disgusted by the sight of so much lack of care for the local environment. Perhaps something that could be done in Stafford as an alternative method of litter awareness? Perhaps a big collection and then a pile up for a day or so in the Market Square right outside the lovely Shirehall...? In this Country we concentrate far too much on "out of sight, out of mind" waste management - let people look at, walk around and shop amongst all the rubbish for a bit - that should get people rightly vexed about what is all to often an ignored issue

Hi Franklin

Thankyou for your nice comment. As of yet, I havent arranged any formal litter picks within Forebridge. I merely find the likeminded individuals and then issue them with the litter pickers to litter pick as and when they are able. However I have recently been in contact with Cllr Tom Harris regarging organising a BIG TIDY UP of Stafford, something on the lines of what you were suggesting and then making some kind of statement with the litter. I definetly believe something like this is needed to make those inconsiderate individuals think twice before dropping litter. Cllr Harris has a lot of experience of organising litter picks within Forebridge, so this is something he is looking into.

Since my last post, I have been in contact with Friends of the Earth and informed them of what we were trying to do here in Forebridge and also that I had the files, and all the relevant information from KEEP STONE TIDY webmaster to setup an almost identical website for Stafford to help spread the word. He responded very positively and has copied the Stafford Co-ordinator in so hopefully through that group we will be able to attract even more volunteers. With regard to the website, he is going to look into attaching a KEEP STAFFORD TIDY website to Stafford Friends of the Earth. However this has not been confirmed yet.

With regard to piling up rubbish. This is my next step with KFC if they do not start taking the issue of litter at there restuarant seriously. I have now started seperating all KFC litter that I and others are collecting in readiness to return it to them if they do not start cooperating.

Thanks Ben

Brilliant idea about KFC. I would suggest that you collect up then dump the bags of their rubbish in the middle of the carpark, or better still in the middle of the restaurant. Could be worth doing with all other fast food outlets in town and other "large scale rubbish" offenders like Supermarkets. Whilst it is true that they don't physically drop the rubbish they should play their part in working with the community and Streetscene to clear up mess which is direct consequence of their business - some do their bit (ASDA for example recently did a big litter pick along the river) but too many turn a blind eye. Time to make it personal

Not sure what Streetscene are doing nowadays. I used to live on Eccleshall road and remember it foundly and still have friends there who take turns picking up litter on the godawful Stone Rd. I have helped on occasions I don't even live in Stafford

On 2 occasions a friend has emailed and phoned SBC to have fly tiping removed from behind the bus stop near the Common entrance on the Stone Rd. I too have called them.

All this was before Xmas where there had been what I only hoped was dog excremant on the left bigs (saw pics of this). As of today this pile is still there which is odd considering the big fly tipping push SBC have been doing in recent months.

by the mill wheels on mill bank whihc must a haven for drinkers, there are the same mass of beer cans and bottles there and the same can be said the station side of Victoria Park

I think Streetscene have let standards slip

Corporation Street/Tithe Barn/Cambridge Street area has a lot of litter in the gutters this year. It was pretty clean in previous years.
I think StreetScene needs to do a proper road sweeper job of this area - if only people could move their cars out of the way for a day. Although I do keep the footpath and road gutter clear outside of my house anyway.

Standards are definitely slipping re streetscene. I have no idea why we can't all have a set street sweeper day so that those of us wiithout off road parking can move our cars out of the way. We used to regularly get our road swept, and you could always see where the sweeper had had to go around the many parked cars because no-one knew the road was going to be swept. Can't be too hard to organise surely?

I have actually raised the performance of Street scene with the council. The letter I wrote basically said that although I sympathise with Streetscene becuase they have a very difficuilt job, I believe that they were being let down by the laissez faire attitude of the BC and there failure to take enforcement of individuals and companies. I then went onto state how I had contacted Network Rail, Tesco and KFC and just by making a single phone call I managed to get some action. Therefore why cant the Borough Council adopt a similar approach.

I recieved a responce back from Saul Hocking the Enforcement and Performance Officer for the Borough Council who has invited me to contact him directly if I have any environmental crime issues. I am confident that once Saul gets a number of emails requesting greater action we may start to see some improvements.

Kyoto's suggestion seems feasible. Just requires some organisation.
And a modicum of co-operation, unfortunately. I know somebody in this sort of position on Corporation Street - Street Scene put notices through letter-boxes in response to her request, asking for the road to be clear for the annual fallen leaf removal campaign. Just a couple of hours access was required. There was so little 'community response' that they could get at hardly any of it....

Thankyou Franklin, I may take you up on that offer and please feel free to invite me to any litter picks that are arranged in Littleworth.

In response to 1JKz - What I and others are proposing is nothing to onerous. We are merely inviting likeminded individuals, who care about the community in which they live and therefore want to keep it clean to litter pick when they are able to do so. In Forebridge, the members of the group take responsibilty of there streets or section of street and litter pick as and when they can. This is normally twice a week. A few of us who are more mobile and have more time to spare look after slightly larger areas. Again this is not a rigid arrangement, we merely take a carrier bag with us when we walk through the streets of Forebridge to the town centre. This only adds a few minutes extra to our journey and improves the area. Through this regular litter picking we are seeing a noticable difference and the number of volunteers are increasing.

In fact today I have recieved an email from Anita Hobbs a borough councillor for the neighbouring ward of Rowley about introducing a similar scheme there...... so who knows Franklin maybe one day we will get a spotless Stafford.

I agree with everything Franklin has said above which is why i implemented this scheme in my local area.

I really like all the ideas about litter picking , will join the Rowley branch if and when it runs.We take a carrier bag while out walking the dog.Streetscene don`t seem to be emptying as often - 8am Sunday 13th all bins by station, Castletown and balancing pools absolutely chokka. Hubby emailed them yesterday. Awaiting response. Suspect workforce hours have been cut at Streetscene.

You smooth operator - i bet you say that to all the girls.

Thanks Withnail.... I always use that line.

I have a meeting with Stafford Friends of the Earth next week regarding linking their website with a new KEEP STAFFORD TIDY group website and trying to attract new volunteers to take an active part in keeping their little piece of Stafford tidy.
