Always one to vote for Terry Pratchett here - try the series about Tiffany that starts with 'The Wee Free Men' or The standalone book 'The Amazing Maurice And His Educated Rodents.'

More votes for Michael Morpurgo and Derek Landy's Skullduggery Pleasant books. Also Garth Nix - my favourite was Sabriel. Umm. Philip Pullman?

Judy Bloom's stuff for younger kids is good but a bit American. 'Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing' was one but check before you buy as she covers a wide age range, dunno if she's even in shops anymore though :(
Paula Danziger
Malorie Blackman
Susan Cooper
Alan Garner
(Trying to remember what I read as a kid!)

Hope that's a few more ideas, many are fantasy though so if she prefers another genre I can have a bit more of a think :)

I gave a copy of 'Lord of the Flies' to a ten-year-old chap a week or so ago. I am unsure as to whether this was altogether a good idea, though he seems to be enjoying it.

I was actually looking for my copy of 'To Kill a Mockingbird' to give to him but couldn't find it - i don't think there is ever a bad time/age to read that.

I have well worn copies of both books here, I think ten is a decent age to start reading them. A book is a marvellous present to give a child of any age, even a 50yr old one like me. You can lose yourself in it. Let your imagination go wild. The same cannot ever be said of a dvd.

I went to the Shaw Trust Charity shop this morning (you know the one, where the lady stands infront of the door smoking a fag & wont let you in). She let me in & I picked up a copy of Mr Stink by David Walliams for 50p!

..Ive read it already this afternoon - its really good, hope mini-me enjoys it too :)

I second or third lol Skulduggery Pleasant, Alan Garner, a lot of classics, of course Terry Pratchett. I'd like to add Rick Riordan and his Percy Jackson/Carter Kane etc stuff. How about The Hobbit? The How to Train your Dragon books by Cressida Cowell are rather fun too. Daniel X by James Patterson are quite fun too. If she likes Pegasus Then the books by Kate O'Hearn are fun, I have all of mine signed as we bumped into her at a book shop a couple of years back :)
Glad she likes reading, I love reading but so far only Spawn2 has a slight interest. We've just started The Weirdstone of Brisingamen with her as part of her English studies.
I loved some of Enid Blyton as a child but as an adult I find them highly irritating now lol.

She had no interest in books at all till a few months back.....for the last however many years at school shes hidden, lost or forgotten her reading book on a weekly basis just to get out of reading it! But now shes read most of the Jacquline Wilson books, Cathy Cassidy & shes enjoying David Walliams at the momemt - she finished Ratburger over the weekend with a lot of giggling & laughing out loud. :)

Strange.

recently introduced to www.bookdepository.com/ who rival the book people on price once postage and packaging has been taken into account.
mine quite like Wreck This Journal series by Kerri Smith. Less reading, more doing but it inspires an interest in books. James Patterson has been mentioned and he gets my thumbs up too.
