The 9pm close would be a Licence issue you have to pay to trade after a given time, I could be wrong here but I think its after 10 or maybe 11

But surely they've got a licence to open beyond 9pm because they were doing so before. Have they had there licence revoked / amended already??

When me and my friend went the other week we didn't even get there til 8:30 - I doubt anyone could eat that quickly to be done by 9!

We were there til gone 11:30, although admittedly we were talking and lost track of time...

A few posts under my belt
Having been and eaten a couple of times, while it's dissapointing at least it's not closing completley, I had a chat with them and they explained why... basically as somone may have suggested the chefs were demanding too much money and were letting costs start to spiral on goods. He said to me tonight they originally intended it to be a Fish and Chip resteraunt but were being forced into fine(ish) dining by the chefs and one of the 'silent' partners.

So while it is a shame, at least it's not closing down, and it I can say their takeaway is as good as it was before the change... I guess it makes it sort of like Rick Stien's 'fancy' Fish and Chip resteraunt.

Stafford town centre is a very difficult place to trade in. The failure rate is massive of any new venture, especially if you are pitching it slightly upmarket.

I don't entirely agree with this. I think it depends on what you are supplying. I think there is plenty of money in stafford, people are just choosy how they spend it. We (Saffron) are perceived as pitching slightly up market but we are celebrating our 10th Birthday next year - quite an achievement for an independent. By the way I say we are perceived as being up market as we have moved with the times and have noted over the last year or two that people have changed the way they spend, during the recession and now during the recovery so we now cater to a wider price range. We have lowered our price bracket, but having said that we still sell plenty of our high end bras too.

Noticed the other day that they had set up an account here -

http://www.staffordforum.com/xf/index.php?members/off-the-hook-seafood.11458/

- and were online (*insert hook and/or sinker gag here*).

Was rather looking forward to hearing what they might have to say - can understand a certain amount of hesitation to enter the fray, as 'twere, but they could probably do with making the effort. Maybe they have done so on the book of faces, i wouldn't know, but come on @Off The Hook Seafood , give us the inside story, what?

Lobster, chips & mushy peas twice please. Oh, and have you got any pickled onions?

I wonder if Stone has a population less related to a fixed salary than Stafford

In other words - more people are salaried ( per head of pop ) in Stafford, and on a fixed income and therefore less likely to be in a position to randomly go out for a weekday meal and support restaurants

Perhaps Stone has more of a business ownership population whose income can see peaks of wealth which can be rewarded with feel good spending

Not got any stats to back this though

Just caught up (no pun intended) with this thread.

So, after 5 weeks, it's closing for a week to turn itself into a chippy?

Barmy.

I was about to book a table, only came on this thread to get a number.

...5 weeks!?

There's a chippy on every corner, why would I go out my way to visit this place, now?

I still can't see the new menu. Whilst I like Steak and Kidney Pies and Chips I don't consider this menu to be dynamic.

According to the website 'Off the Hook is a dynamic new restaurant...'

I have to admit I'm intrigued, can you do posh curry sauce? No wonder they needed a week to sort things out though, if everything is battered they needed to replace the grill with fryers.

I would have thought they already had fryers - it was always a take away fish and chip shop from day one, they just ran it alongside the restaurant

But now they just serve battered stuff, nowt grilled at all. Apart from the pies that go in the oven it's all deep fried, that grill would be a massive waste of space.
