Is this what you were referring to Darben? I could see how this could
develop into The Knot given several centuries. The entity in the carving
is known as: "Orm".

Or from the Latin vermis...
Turns out that 'Orm' is a Nordic name meaning 'snake','serpent' or 'dragon'.

According to the delightfully unexpected 'the Orme web site', the ORM of the condiditing of St. Chad's was one Orme of Darlaston - aka the Orm of Ormskirk.

Given that St. Chad's is Orms kirk, we could rename it as Ormskirk to lure unsuspecting SatNav users into the centre of Stafford to boost Christmas event numbers.

I have not.

I was once very close to Tarragona - even saw the sign saying *whatever the word for 'twinned' is in 'Spanish' (more likely 'Catalonian') with Stafford* and probably could have wangled a day off to actually go there - but decided instead to 'pitch in'.

It has remained to this day one of my more unusual regrets.

'Spanish' (more likely 'Catalonian')
One of the twin-town flags outside the station used to be a Catalan flag, red & yellow multi-stripes, and I promised to get a picture of it for a Catalan friend who was surprised that it should be flown here - but, by the time I went to photograph it, it had been replaced by a Spanish one,
