The Market Sq paving is falling apart because the council got a cheapo deal on a surface that isn't supposed to take heavy vehicles. (Allegedly but true.)

(Unevidenced hearsay) I vaguely remember hearing at the time that they were importing slabs from China because it was cheaper and there were concerns about the long term maintenance viability of constantly importing single replacement slabs raised which were brushed aside for a quick political win.

As a said above, they have to source matching slabs each time. They need cutting to size, bedding sand and a special trip. Tarmac gangs are available all the time and can easily pop in on their rounds using a ready supply of material
