GE to cut 1,100 power business jobs in Britain

I'm not surprised. The T&D markets have changed massively in the past 10 years... All the big three (Siemens, GE and ABB) have been struggling.

It used to be an annual event in the old days - the sign that the Christmas season has officially started.

I'm hearing 370 to go from Stafford over the next couple of years

Heard 500 myself, goes on till christmas 2019.

Know a lot as someone I know works there, but don't really want to say that much just incase

I know a bit of it, is outdated and probably going completely can't say much like I said just incase.

The businesses in Stafford keep changing hands and every time it does changes are always going to happen. Nobody sells a vibrant and profitable business. I guess the big question is why haven't they moved to producing products the market wants? it's been years since New Labour said the future would be renewables.

As someone once said to me when I had the misfortune to work in one its previous incarnations, "We're not here to make (insert product), we're here to make money".

The whole energy industry had been a disorganised shambles for fifty years.

I guess it depends what part of the business people work in as there are many divisions of GE. My OH works there and 370 was the figure discussed in their briefing yesterday

The problem isn't as simple as making the products they markets wants as I think you find GE still are. Unfortunately, the problem is that the Far East manufacturers (think Korea, China, etc) are also making the same products albeit with much lower prices (helped by lower labour costs and unofficial government help). European based manufacturers just can't compete and with the squeeze on budgets across all market segments the outcome is almost inevitable...

I think people working within the company are still unclear on a number of facts and some of this is down to the description or naming of some of the divisions. Some are under the "Grid" banner and some are under the "Power" banner and then there are unit names within these.
I work for the company and even I am not sure if the 129 from Generators is included in the overall quoted 370, in Stafford, or are part of the quoted 1100 GE jobs in the UK? There is a 2 year process so we are in very early days yet.

Glad to see that the old standards are being maintained. Half the time I was there I didn't really know who I worked for. Also, the only contract that I ever signed was with AEI. Every know and then, they would ask me to sign a new one, but could never give me a convincing reason to do so, so I didn't.

"Blames lagging coal demand" was the headline I saw on this.

Well... yeah. That's kind of the plan. GE not seeing this coming is a bit daft. In the US they're still doing well because Trump and his buddies love a bit of dirty electricity lobbying money. That doesn't fly as easily over here, thankfully our government has a lick of sense in that regard.

Sucks for the employees and I feel for them, but this is wholly on GE for being so god damn ignorant to where power production is moving to.
