Anyone knowledgeable on bank chargebacks

I am grateful if anyone is on here knowledgable about fraudulent transactions and chargebacks..

I left my phone in a bar loo in Fuerturventura ..... yes like a complete idiot I took off pass code because I was taking photos ....

I got my phone back from someone who said it had been handed in. I never gave it another thought.

It transpired that someone had a little shopping trip on my apps. (eBay, booking.con mainly) eBay I was able to cancel but there was a few bookings made on booking.com which I cancelled.

On the day before we were travelling back to UK I couldn’t get money from my bank account so I rang them and they told me about two pending transactions for a hotel in Lanzarote . I told them it was a fraudulent transaction, it was a booking via an app on my phone which was cancelled. They cancelled the pending payment and I thought I was safe. At 9.30pm that night my bank sent me a snotagram telling my to put funds in my account. The hotel had reapplied for the money (£2700) and they just took it.

I again rang my bank (HSBC) and they had not cancelled my card. Which they then did refunded the money and said they now do an investigation.

They say it takes 60 days. If they can get the money refunded its all okay but if not I will have to pay the £2700 .... for a holiday that doesnt exist.

Has anyone had a similar experience .... what is the likelihood of the bank recovering the money. I am panicking that they will just take the money back from me.

I have rang and they said they are still investigating and to leave it with them. Apparently I just wait 60 days ......

I know I’m an idiot for leaving my phone and debit card in the phone which is why they could have their little shopping trip - something that won’t be repeated.

Thank you for any advice given

I had a similar experience, thankfully not for such a larg amount. I noticed on my online bank statement a company in London had taken out £800 for gardening supplies, I raised it with Nationwide and they said the same as your bank, they would paid me the money back and then they would take out a dispute against whoever it was. At the same time there was 2 seperate transactions for takeaways thru Just Eat totalling £100. The only time I had used just eat was for Kebabs from Alis.
A dispute was raised, again and I received the money back into my account.
Luckily the first amount was found to be fradulent, Nationwide did whatever they had do, I kept my £800 and I was obviously very happy.
The £100, they said I had ordered the food and take said amount back out of my account. Since there was no way I could prove I hadn't made the order, I was £100 out of pocket and was told there was nothing else I could do about it.
I am still with Nationwide, but changed my debit card, and luckily nothing similar has happened since.
I hope for your sake @Tinkerbell it is found in your favour. Cos that is one hell of a lot of money to have stolen.
And I wouldn't call you an idiot for forgetting your phone, it's easily done. Sadly there's some lowlife out there who will take advantage any chance they get xx

@Glam - please can I ask how long it took for them to make their decision x they’ve told me to wait 60’days and if I don’t hear anything consider it closed (like I have that much money lying around)

Just Eat had £22 off my card. I have never used them in my life. They suggested I call the police.

I didn,t bother.

We’re you stopping at the hotel that took the money, if not what was the difference in time between you leaving to catch a plane and the date the payment was taken, you would have had to stay for a long time to use up £2700.00.

I would challenge this, I am sure you have 14 days to cancel anything purchased on the Internet. The bank will try and get out of paying anything, your main problem may be that they will say you were careless with your phone.

This happened to me. Fortunately, my bank spotted money being taking out of my bank fraudunately and telephoned me to query the payments.

All the money was returned to me.

I hope you get your money back.

Yes, I did. I was worried that they would put it down to my error but there was nothing else I could say

Another thought which is what we use when we take payments on our site which I am sure will help, try and find out how the money was paid to the company or companies that took the payment, if it was an online transaction they should have been asked for their 3D secure password, most people are aware of this in the UK. If the bank failed to ask them for it then they are at fault, for anyone who is not familiar with 3D secure you have a password and only you and the bank know what it is.

We have had the odd transaction where the fraudster has know the password, if we send the goods then we are protected should the customer complain. We also have had some transactions where the 3D secure password is correct but it is obvious it is a fraud so we have cancelled the order and refunded the payment.

If you would like to get in touch and see if I can help further then feel free to do so.

I've not been asked for my visa password in years, the box briefly pops up then disappears again.

Hope it gets sorted, was the booking in your name?

Thank you for your responses.

Yes, unfortunately because I left my phone they accessed my phone and made a booking via my app on booking.com. Various bookings and secured it with my debit card (kept in my phone) but details were also on booking.com app

You don’t need anything as all
My details were stored (which has now been rectified and details removed )

I contacted the hotel and said it was a fraudulent transaction but I struggled to get someone to understand me as it was in Lanzarote.

HSBC can’t give me an update as yet. They have repaid the £2700 but I have to wait 60 days. If they can’t fight it I will have the money redebited (money I haven’t got)

Booking.com advised me to go to Police - I contacted them and they said they can’t deal or even give me a crime reference as it’s in a foreign country.

The booking doesn’t exist now but hotel still took full payment. It’s a nightmare.

I queried that with the bank when I was last in there. Used to have to put a 'clicksafe ' password in to continue with the transaction. Now it goes to the clicksafe screen, then carries on and approves it itself without me entering anything. Was told that's ok by one member of staff," it approves itself ". :?: ...another said it shouldn't do that! Thought that was the whole idea of a password, it needs to be entered to prove it's legit .:q::q:

Hope you get it sorted soon @Tinkerbell

Try https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ if you click on contact us they have a range of options including live web chat. They will be able to help better than the local police plus advise you about the crooked hotel.
