Conflicting information is floating around as to weather or not (pun intended) hosepipe restrictions will be brought in, the grass in my field is crackling underfoot, it stopped growing days ago and if this dry and sunny spell continues for much longer it will all be dead.

I was talking with a friend who informed me that ban or no ban she will still be filling the paddling pool and watering the garden and I was wondering how many other people choose to carry on regardless.

It'll be a nightmare for us if it does come in with 30 odd newly planted trees, three large areas of new hedging and several areas of freshly seeded grass that so far isn't doing much other than feeding the pigeons, as far as I'm aware we could still use the hose for the animals which would be far more convenient than lugging water troughs around several times a day but the garden will more than likely end up being lost.

We still have well stocked water butts, although another week without rain and we might be struggling. Am using the hose on anything not in the greenhouse.

I would adhere to the ban if there is one though , cant be arsed with the authorities banging at my door , ive enough to do without that .

We haven't got a hosepipe. I've just watered the few new plants, that have survived my fortnights holiday, with a watering can.

Someone over the back today has spent 2 hours with a bloody noisy pressure washer . (Probably why we only had a trickle this morning, they were grabbing what water was coming through before the supply reached us..)

Severn Trent have sent me this twice today...

Hi, it's Severn Trent. The continued hot weather means we're seeing a huge increase in demand for water in your area. We've got plenty stored in our reservoirs and we're pumping lots more into supply but we have to treat it first and its being used quicker than we can create it which can cause low pressures. We.??re therefore asking everyone to be neighbourly to prevent this particularly at peak times by.Avoiding garden sprinklers, they use as much as 4 people use in a day. Taking a shower instead of a bath saves 40L of water Avoid washing cars for now Find out more at stwater.co.uk

Got text from Severn Trent asking me to avoid garden sprinklers which I tend to do this as a matter of course to avoid getting soaked.

They also say avoid washing cars so that's my bobajob week scuppered :)

I have had an automated phone call this afternoon saying the same.

So the questions sre would you ignore the ban to protect your precious garden and would you report those you see flaunting the ban ?

I would stick to the rules and with the exception of the ponies water (attached to the stable rather than the house anyway) we wouldn't use the hose.

I'm not sure I would go to the trouble of reporting anyone (who do you report to anyway) it does seem a bit petty - unless it was crazy cat stealing lady, then I'd be dialling 999 faster than she could turn the tap off! :strange:

Hosepipe bans in previous droughts have been weird. There was a ban on washing cars but you could hose down your driveway for example. Fill a paddling pool but not water your garden - except while you couldn't water your garden with a hose there was nothing to stop you traipsing backward & forward with a watering can all day. You weren't supposed to use rainwater from water butts because you could be surreptitiosly filling the butt with a hosepipe. Field day for good old British bureaucracy.

Grasses emerged during the Cretaceous era, and survived the K-T extinction event. I reckon they'll see off one hot summer.
