Just tried to go to this - I was only a couple of minutes late and they'd locked the door!

I must have looked dodgy. I do have a white van.
Sorry to hear this, ill pass this on, (you being locked out that is - not looking dodgy) I guess they had no one to monitor the door once they started. The security on the door is due to it being a school.

still looks plenty wide enough for cars and vans it was only single file before. its now less likely the clumsy driver will damage the brickwork.

That’s exactly why it’s being done. Apparently there have been lots of hits to the bridge by useless drivers so they have added the kerbing as they have done on the bridge between Milford and Tixall.

Being a bit longer, and not having a parallel footbridge, the river bridge on Holdiford Road has 'footage' gaps, for pedestrian refuge when a motorist feels obliged to not wait for them to get across first...

When "useless drivers" can actually hit Essex Bridge, you might wonder what defences you have to place to stop it?

'BASWICH LANE CANAL BRIDGE
is now OPEN as from 12 noon on the 8th November . I would also like to say a thank you to Dan & his team from Canal Riverway Trust for listening to the public and getting the bridge opened AHEAD of the planned date. Well done, I am sure the residents appreciate this superb effort. Cllr Ann Edgeller '
