Okay okay but the real question is...

What would Superman do about covid-19?

Or any superhero for that matter?

Thoughts?

Defeat the bald headed Lex Luther and his sycophantic sidekick Boris .. Sorry Otis of course!

Cut scene to Lex’s secret hideway under Barney Castle. Boris is asking what the next steps are in their pursuit of world domination.

Lex – We introduce a UK wide track and trace system.

Otis – But I don’t understand? How will that help us?

Lex – I put Dido in charge.

Otis – Baroness Dido? Wife of tory MP John Penrose, classmate of David Cameron, former CEO of Talk Talk during the time up to 4 million customer records were hacked with their customer service being rated as the worst in the UK? The current racecourse committee director at Cheltenham racecourse who allowed one of the biggest racing events to go ahead whilst the rest of Europe was shutting down and everybody with a brain in the UK was shouting ‘WHAT ARE YOU DOING!’

Lex – Yes!

Boris - But but….. Wow MY GOD that’s brilliant they will never see that coming. But what about Superman.

Lex – Don’t worry it’s been sorted.

Cut scene to Clarke Kents apartment. The phone is ringing, Kent walks over and picks it up.

Kent – Hello

Voice on phone – Hello Mr kent this is NHS track and trace I’m calling you to say you must not leave you home for 15 days for any reason!

Roll credits to close up Lex and Boris laughing hysterically.

I went supermarket shopping for the first time in 2 weeks and wow what a change in people's behaviours.

I counted only 2 face masks, 3 people wearing gloves, people picking up items and replacing them, a total lack of any social distancing and people merrily chatting away as if there was no danger of infection.

Tesco staff were also quite happy to ignore distancing but this time they were blatantly ignoring the one way system as well.

I'm so glad the pandemic is all over and everyone's readjusting to normal live again!!!! How long before the next peak in infections and subsequent deaths?

Why are people such idiots?

I haven't worn a face mask or gloves at the supermarket yet. I might start with the face mask but not sure the gloves do anything other than spread it...

I know it is very sad and very dangerous, but you seem surprised? The whole lockdown was based on the concept of ‘we are all in this together, for the common good’ Anybody who broke the rules risked becoming a social outcast and carried the guilt of their actions with them. That has now changed, with rule breakers being praised for using their common sense and being good parents. People are confused and therefore they are doing their own risk assessments, using their own common sense and deciding that the risk (to themselves) is worth it especially as everybody else is doing what they want. They have lost trust in the rule makers, as they have been seen to interpret and change the rules to suit themselves. People are no longer thinking of what’s best for society but of what is best for themselves, taking a lead directly from the government.

I am not defending this response – It is now going to get far more difficult for everybody especially if you are in a high risk category group. I fear a second peak is now more likely than ever.

It is very sad, but also very predictable given the government’s actions this week.

I did a supply run into Bude this morning. Quite sad to see it so deserted on a spring day like this during the half term. Normally it would be bustling in this sort of weather.
North Cornwall isn't as touristy as the southern half but tourism is still a major source of employment and finance. I've heard many small businesses involved in tourism have already gone to the wall. Couldn't have come at a worse time.

The farmers are starting to get very nervous about the lack of rain (and none in sight for a week or more.)

It's getting biblical ... !!! (I wonder if there's any chance Dominic (Rasputin) Cummings could come and get an eye test in Tintagel Castle.)

I drove out to give the battery another charge and fill up with petrol at the local Petrol garage. Only one old lady in at the till paying, so I hung around well away until she finally finished her conversation with the cashier and started coming out. Then she did a detour in the shop, getting closer and closer to me as I was backing away further across the shop... then she finally went out without buying anything else anyway. No sense or what?
(And after that scare, I forgot to grab the planned Mars Bar off the shelf as I was paying )

We know now that not only are there no consequences, but we should be praised for breaking lockdown, isn't that what the overlords said?

Enjoying a drop of red.

OK so there has been a lot of 'noise' lately.

We can argue the toss about all sorts of things, and we can perform our outrage in a creative dance of some sort. Maybe keep that for Xmas in lieu of charades.

But we need to remain focused, and just as before, behave as if we are actual adults and not petulant children - obviously i am talking to you as an actual adult, and not as a member of our current Government.

I am now going to present to you two graphs, neither of which are pretty -

1.
mort.jpg

This one is really for anyone having to suffer the ridiculousness of the 'deniers' in your life - if this isn't really happening, why is it quite obviously absolutely happening?

The rather obviously rising line in all of ^the above represents deaths above the norm that would be expected over an entire 'field' of norms - the shaded part along which a median line passes through is either a five or ten year average, tbf i'm not sure which, but it doesn't really make much of a difference. Note that on all of these graphs the rise begins @ c.week13 ie week beginning 23/03, the very day that our weak-ass 'common-sense' lockdown was imposed.

It is also to at least give some assurance to people like @littleme , and by extension minime, that the cohort they are in are not going to die from this. No one wants to be the cause of anyone else dying, to be sure, so that isn't the only story here. And no one wants to lose their parents or grandparents, and the grief that comes with it, if it can be easily avoided. But the evidence is now overwhelming that this is not going to kill your kids.

It is also worth noting that the differences in mortality between male & female are there, but a little less pronounced, however the differences between the under/over 45's are massive.

2.

- so this is for the 85+ age group, and is really as much as anything to show how clearly we have failed to protect the most vulnerable in our care. Note also that Sweden has questions to answer. I suppose you have to look into your heart and ask whether it's such a big deal to "let old people die".

People die, and continue to do so due to all sorts of things, like, all the time, but when lots and lots of people all die at the same time, within a very short space of time, it's probably almost certain that there's a quantifiable reason.

'We' f**ked up early on, that much is clear, and more mistakes have been made since - that much is clear even to someone with dodgy eyesight.

But in our failing leadership's own terms 'we are where we are', are we not?

But ... now is not the time to blow it. Just because Dom is a terrible c**t, doesn't mean you should emulate his achievements, what?

Even the harshest critic must acknowledge that No.11 has made where we are possible - i am currently furloughed, as i imagine many of you out there are too, and i know folk who are self-employed who are cautiously optimistic that they'll survive it all because of the financial support available.

If you are furloughed, your Employer won't need to empty their pockets in any significant way until July - if you are in this position, resist as much as you can any pressure to return until then. If there is no reason you cannot continue to WFH, press for it to continue for at least another month - if there is no noticeable down turn in your productivity, perhaps keep doing it forever? If you want to. But just one more month isn't too much. If you can access the SEISS for just one more month, do it.

We are so close.

Just one more month, as difficult as it both appears to be and in many ways is.

We know our Government is shit - we actually started to shut down before we were 'ordered' to, exactly because we instinctively knew how shit they are. The Premier League halted the season before being 'ordered' to, i know people who took their children out of school before they were closed, everyone knew which way the wind was blowing...

The entire irony of our situation is that if we had started a proper lockdown just two weeks earlier than we did, we wouldn't have to be waiting four weeks more now.

But we are where we are...

One. More. Month.

Dido Harding just told me on an MPs’ conference call that Test, Trace & Isolate won’t be fully operational at local level till the end of June.

Please bear in mind that we currently have new infections in the thousands, and deaths still in the hundreds.

Every day.

Ideally, to put out local fires, hotspots of infection, you'd want that to be new infections in the hundreds, and deaths in the tens.

Which is what July looks like.

The 'end of June' also looks a lot like July.
