Memorable Pub Landlords

I booked into the White Lion when I was a student; the landlord was a great guy but he told me to leave because the pub was being closed down. He went on to run the Chains which was a small, but friendly pub - full of students but some old geezers as well.
Yes, that was Gordon Eccles.
His move was in early January 1976 the same date as Brian Deakin went from the Unicorn to the Sun, both for demolition and building Queensway

On the same subject I used to drink in the hand and cleaver as a teenager and I dont think I ever knew they had hosts never mind the name of one

I also was a member of the 'nursery' in The Sun where Brian and Potcheen used to turn a blind eye to the youth policy

The landlord of the Pheasant had a proper blind eye in them days too
Yes, and that was Sid Tomlinson who had the Pheasant from 1939 to 1980, and also a milk round for much of that time.

Right, I believe Len was there in 1984. What was the Doss House? - not the Plough which closed in 75?.
Son John had Roses undertakers next door. He's still about in Wales with an Hotel.
Bob, was he a builder? was his wife Wendy? could he fix it?
Yes, Bob the Builder !

John Talbot, ex of the Plough, Browning Street and the Amasal Club, has passed on - funeral at the crematorium at 10:30 this coming Tuesday.

All details as I have remembered from a conversation this morning, so it might be worth checking..
I didn't use the Plough but remember Reg Ainsworth across the road in the Victoria.

Not looked if this news is on any other thread, but Arthur Candlin jr died 9th March. Ex landlord of Kings Head, Doxey Arms and New Inn. Funeral next thursday at Crem 12.30.
I remember both Arthur Candlins, Senior at the Kings Head the top pub for darts and Junior in the New Inn and Doxey Arms and he was a milkman for a while.

From 1974 to 1976 I lived nearby in Newquay Avenue.
Frank Carey and his beer were two reasons why I didn't use the Crossbow.
Glad it wasn't the young barmaid that put you off going
'The Major' would make me serve mostly in the lounge, as he didn' t trust the men in the bar which I preferred working in :heyhey:.
My main dread ( apart from Trish his wife)) was being summoned to serve the 'elite ' in the cocktail bar.

Ray Till was one of the town's best publicans.
Very sadly he died after a routine knee operation.
Knew him well . Apparently him and my dad used to go scrumping together somewhere up Corporation St as kids many moons ago.

A great bloke !

Alan used to terrify us when we were kids when we used to knock on the Bell offy window to buy pop or chocolates.

He was mates with my mate's dad and occasionally came to United with us and we'd sit in the back of the car too frightened to say anything to "Mr" Turner :)

I know. Keith Webb, son of Nellie was there in 1980, then there was a Laura, can't remember Stan may have been Keith's brother . I certainly remember Ron Wilson, left suddenly in 1990 owing money to the old Ansells Darts League.
The Feenans yes, you could go in there, via the big german shepherd and order a plate of beef sandwiches, nothing was too much trouble for Audrey. Then the council moaned about some stupid sign outside, really p.....ing her off. It closed and got covered in graffitti and loads of posters, council didn't moan then, just the whole of stafford for a few yeas.
Keith was a very well known drummer in the 60's played for Donovan and Terry Reid, was with reid as support to led zepp on their first US tour, oh the tales!

Ray Till of the coach and horses........ Tom of the castle tavern......
Ray Till was my father in law - lovely man - sadly missed by his grandson - We took over the coach from Ray and struggles 6 years when bass sold all the pubs off and we were tied to barrelage and had to buy beer from the two bit company that brought it and that hadn't got a clue about how to run pubs
