Memorable Pub Landlords

I can remember a few of them, I heard about history of Stafford pubs from some of the older regulars in the coach and horses, when I was the landlady there.


They used to be able to name all the pubs in Stafford and tell you which ones weren't there anymore. The elephant and castle was well before my time. Couldn’t believe there was a pub in Stafford called that and the old blue suitcase.


I recall meeting Clive from the nags - Jos Feenan and Audrey from the eagle -Brian Deakin from the sun can’t recall the name of the lady that had the Falcon before it closed down for good. The bear had Sheila and Tony and then they went to the Shrewsbury arms. The shrew has so many landlords over the next few years. Johnie Howe at the lord Nelson, Trevor at The Rifleman


The old days of making a living from a pub have gone. The pub companies are the only one that make a profit now from the high rents.

Anyone remember The Engine Inn in Telegraph Street? I think the landlord's name was Michael Rose for its latter years.

Dennis rose last landlord closed 1969

Absolutely right industryarch, Dennis was the landlord my apologies, Michael was his son who introduced me to the hostelry, (actually no more than a terraced house) I drank rum and blackcurrant, my introduction to alcohol as a teenager which caused me a three day serious illness, the drink never to be consumed again!

Joe Hill at the Prince of Wales, Weston Road, back in the 60/70's. His son Alan had the Telegraph for a while in the 70's. Dave Pemberton had the Gate in the 80's (lovely pint of Ansell's Mild in there.) I also remember Clive at the Nag's Head and then the Castle Tavern. Melv Smith (another Rec kid) had the Shepherd's Bushes back in the day too.

I was able to write a 320 word obituary about Ray Till.
I sent a copy of it to Elsie and still have her March 2004 letter thanking me.
