I was in Brazil a staggering (well to me anyway) 30+ years ago, where all 'petrol' stations had ethanol pumps.

The only surprise to me is that it has taken this long for it to be an option over here.

The big problem is that in using maize, wheat, barley etc to produce ethanol is that you are using the crops and competing for land with food crops. What is needed is a way of producing fuel fron crop residues, stems, leaves etc, so that you are producing food & fuel from the same crop.

Tonight, I had my first sample of this - from a local (local to where I am, that is) craft brewer.

It's a pale ale, in the style of the product of a brewery that existed in the town until the mid-1960s.

Unfortunately, Diageo now own the name of that and were reluctant for it to be used.

The name he's using is that of the old Barony that was the area around here - although it ceased to have any official function after 1846, so he should be safe with that.

It was a very pleasant drink after the 'summer evening' that today was here.

The original plan was to launch onto the market last March, but "events" have delayed that.

He does, however, have a few other irons in the fire to keep him busy - his main occupation is being the local funeral director.
