Tillington Hall closing.

Unfortunately Tillington Hall will be closing its doors this weekend. Over the pandemic we have fought to keep the hotel open housing NHS staff and key workers. Our team have worked tirelessly to ensure that we have been looking after each other and our Guests.
The impact of Covid on the hospitality industry had been well publicised. Tillington Hall has also been affected greatly by the restrictions on hospitality. The owners of the hotel have made the decision to close the doors on the hotel and sell the property. We appreciate that this is not the news you would be expecting. We are now in the process of cancelling all bookings in our systems.
If your booking has a deposit attached to it, we will be in contact to arrange a refund. We appreciate that there will be some guests who need to speak to us. Our telephone lines are very busy at the moment and our team are working very hard to cancel all bookings and process refunds. If you do need to contact us please email general@tillingtonhall.co.uk and we will be back in touch.
I would like to personally thank you for your business over the years and appreciate your loyalty.
Until we meet again.
All the best
Andrew Sanders
General Manager

Hmm, if there's already a purpose built hotel heading for the market, it could end plans to regenerate the empty gym, brighthouse, new look building into a new hotel which is already now approx a year behind schedule. They'll either just buy the tillington hotel and put their mark on it, or abandon plans altogether.

Either is a shame, as it would have been a big boost in helping regenerate that area.

This us such a shame, we used to use the swimming pool & gym years ago, and had many nice meals there... How sad.

Was there another Hall further down Eccleshall Rd, nearer to the motorway junction but on the left? Near to where the newer houses are?

Yes - knocked down and built on a few years ago.

Was there not a planning application to build on the grass area in front of Tillington Hall a few years ago?

They must have lost business in recent years to the likes of Premier Inn ( two near junction 14 ) and trendier gyms, there's probably not much money in swimming pools and there are plenty of other places offering "nice meals".
And the site is probably worth a considerable amount for housing development like the former Brooklands School across the road and Garth Hotel nearer junction 13.

Yes. That was owned by the family who had a string of agricultural merchants in the area. As a child, I used to go carol singing there, with friends. We’d be invited in to sing around the Christmas tree. I did feel uncomfortably urchin-like.

Attached to the hall was a small wood, full of bluebells, and a field with chatty donkeys.

Now it’s just houses. Eventually, everything will be just houses.

The rock bands appearing at Bingley Hall used to stay at Tillington Hall. I borrowed a dog every day and used to walk him to the hotel in order to marvel at the exotic-looking fans.

Edit: I remembered the family name of the people who owned that lovely house - Burgess.

That's a pity. Stayed there a few times when re-visiting Stafford. Easy access straight off the M6 without going through the town (which it always seemed to me had been rebuilt or re-arranged since my previous visit.) A nice pleasant walk into town looking up a few old haunts on the way. :(

But those times re-visiting Stafford weren't regular enough for it to still to be viable. .

Brings back memories of Tilly's Thursday night discos (early 70's) , complete with chicken in a basket, everytime I drive past Tillington Hall.

Over never stayed there, but the other half stayed for a night as part of a Craft retreat. I had a wander around the place and just thought it was odd.

To be honest though when it comes to overnight stays, a lot of people like the "standard-ness" of places like premier Inn and holiday Inn express.

Our work used to have a fairly lax travel policy for overnight stays and changed it to just staying at a premier Inn and then have us a amount of money to claim for evening meals...no one batted an eye lid over it....

Yes, "a lot of people like the "standard-ness" of places like premier Inn and holiday Inn express" must account for the demise of many proper old hotels.
I always recommend the Vine as I did to two American friends who would have stayed in Stafford last year had it not been for coronavirus. It's nice and convenient for the railway station and the town centre pubs.
Mrs Mudgie really likes Premier Inns but I resent not being able to open a window and my use of their Dundee Central venue two years ago was marred by a Deeside, rather than townside, room I requested months in advance not being available and there being no bubble and squeak with my breakfasts.
I would far rather stay in the likes of the New Beehive in Bradford and Sun in Preston that I used in 2018 and 2019, at about £30 a night.
As for "work ... policy" the best I did was Carlisle for ten nights in early 1985. Subsistence was paid at £33 a night and I had bed and breakfast in Jennings's lovely Woolpack Inn for £8.50 a night.

Can't help but think the lockdowns had more to do with its failing viability than the lack of my visits. So I don't think I'm going to take the blame for this one. :bum:
I didn't mean to imply that you were solely to blame for the closure !

No surprise. I last went to Tillington for a wake a couple of years ago. Was surprised that the place still looked like it was from the 1970s/80s. Service was distinctly average as well with one person serving a wake of around 120 people.

Can't say I'm a fan of 'standardised' hotels and I've stayed in some both here and across the pond. Have stayed at the Vine in Stafford, which I found OK as you can't knock it's position or prices, and I kind of like creaky staircases.
Best hotel I ever stayed in was in Bremerhaven when on a two week course at the Krupp Radar factory. Good beer, great food and a very courteous staff. Of course I might be a bit biased on that one as Canadian Pacific picked up the entire bill including drinks. So haven't really got a clue what it cost ... :|

Had two works 'do's' there in recent years both distinctly underwhelming experiences.
We went for a running club annual meal there many moons ago. Pre-ordered in advance of the event. They were a meal short when the main course was served, so hubby had to wait for a meal to be cooked especially for him. We'd all eaten our main course, deserts, and had coffee before his meal came out. Luckily he's not the sort to be fazed sitting eating his meal with everyone watching afterwards. He just sat there bragging that he'd had peas on his dinner as well, which we didn't get . (Think he's have kicked up a lot more fuss about it nowadays though)

Sad to see part of our town's tradition closing, be it temporary or permanent. Local people will lose jobs, no doubt. Coming out of this mad period I would hope somebody has imagination and finance to turn such a facility into a hotel spa and fitness club. There's a series of rooms downstairs plus the kitchens and I think the pool still exists, unless it was replaced by a function room?
Really don't want it to be more housing!!!
