I cycled the length of the Stafford-Newport trail and back on Tuesday. Was a bit tougher than I expected (mostly because of the heat and it being all flat) but glad to have done it.

Wasn't a great moment when I got to the "Welcome to Newport" sign and then remembered I had to do it again to get back home, though... XD

I walked it both ways once, and got in most of the Newport pubs before returning.
It must be better now that it goes all the way to Newport, no fence to climb over or main road to walk along.

I used to cycle to MOD Donnington in the summer when I worked there. Billington Bank on the way back was usually my undoing.

Billy bank going into town was a killer but it was Castlebank that did me if I didn't freewheel down Billy bank for some reason. And I was fit in those days.

The ride home to Haughton didn't seem as bad.

I did something brilliant today.

Whenever I take my 10 year old nephew out anywhere he climbs up everything that he shouldn’t and I’m forever saying “Get Down”

I thought, “I know the place for you.”

Booked us both in at Treetop Challenge at Go Ape Cannock (the harder one)

I don’t mind heights too much but I was unprepared for how scared I’d feel or how much of a challenge I’d find it.
At one point I did think that I couldn’t continue but just decided “Feel the fear and do it anyway”

Then each challenge I did, I got braver and started to really embrace it.
Absolutely loved the zip wires. I really felt at the end that I’d pushed myself out of my comfort zone.

Top day out and didn’t let the side down.

"I’m forever saying “Get Down”" - to your 10 year old nephew affectionately known as 'Shep'? !
i've heard there's a proper zip wire in Snowdonia.

Why do you have to be so rude, unsupportive and dismissive?

For your information, I did about 5 zip wires today, the longest 260 metres.

It was a fabulous day out, and probably more challenging, enjoyable and satisfying than sitting on my backside reminiscing about old pubs.

One of the funniest things I've ever seen was about thirty years ago at the Dove Holes caves in Dove Dale. A school party arrived with four teachers, three in their late 20s and a (presumably headmaster) chap clearly approaching retirement. The kids saw the potential for climbing things but were instructed by the elderly chap, who had a limp and a walking stick, not to climb anything, as it was too dangerous.

This was instantly ignored, despite him constantly bellowing in the following context "Safety Instruction, Random name" - eg, Be careful, Simon - Don't do that, Emma - he did this constantly, at great volume for the five minutes they were there.

I was sitting nearby, having my lunch through all this.

The time came for them to depart, and the kids all swarmed down, not a single fall of any kind having occurred.

As they were about to leave, "Sir" slipped and fell on his back, winding himself badly. To be fair, I was nearly as winded by the exertions of laughing at him trying, and failing, to get up.

The other three teachers were almost hyperventilating trying to get him back up without actually visibly laughing.

I would love to have been able to record the incident.

In terms of being 'at height', I'm not a fan of it, but if it is under your control and you can 'ease' yourself into it, you can increase your threshold quite quickly, I find.

Good on you @Carole love. Doing a Zip Wire is on my bucket list, but I would probably chicken out well before climbing the steps to get up to it xx

That's fantastic @Carole - I hate heights, but would love to try it and defintly do a zip wire! My 3yr old grandson frightens the life out if me & I'm forever trying to stop him climbing! (I was never this worried about my own kids).

Well done & I'm glad you enjoyed it.

@proactive my lovely colleague moved to Wales as her husband got a job at that very company, even though I hate heights, I would still love to do it!

I think a Bewilderwood has just opened in Whitchurch. I took my niece to the one in Norfolk about 10 years ago and it was amazing, lots of climbing and as much fun for adults. Well worth a trip out.

I doubt that...

I've done the Welsh zipwire. I was bloody terrified.
.

I think you’ve missed my point. I didn’t say that my zip wire experience was less than the Welsh one which does sound amazing.

I just thought that my day today was an achievement for me, and a better day out than just sitting at a computer talking about old pubs all day.

I thought that @Mudgie just can’t seem to be nice or supportive of people that’s all.

Unless it’s being supportive of anything pub related.

(Accidentally the wrong thread a bit with this post so had to edit it to be topical)

Well done to @Carole for doing the challenge though, there’s probably a joke here one of my old school friends would have made about her being almost high up enough for me to see her from way up here in tall people land or something like that

I dunno, I can’t delete posts so figured I’d make it vaguely interesting

Enjoying a drop of red.

They both sound great, my problem with heights is low walls... Sounds strange I know, as a teen at Warwick/Kenilworth Castle i froze in fear.... But the problem is low walls that the top of things, castles/bridges/etc... All I can think of is what it would be like to jump off... I believe there's a name for it.

Anyhow I still go up high heights in castles etc.... Face your fears!

I think the Welsh one is the longest in the UK, I would probably pee my pants doing it, but I would do it..... Cable cars are a big no no though.....
