And now they're scrapping it, apparently we're the issue because not enough of us applied, so they're pulling funding from those that did

There was a radio news announcement the other day saying that the scheme has ended but is being replaced by “something very similar”. I didn’t catch all the details.

Thats government speak for we've already had the headlines for putting 2bn into it, now we've stole it all back it's the last you'll hear til we make another dodgy scheme! The fact it was heat only was the biggest waste, many people that did get a grant went from gas to heat pumps, but the majority of people use much more electricity than gas yet electricity production methods were excluded.

In better news, I got a survey date! Coming this Wednesday to spec the job properly, so I may get it done after all. It's been a little over 7 months since I applied I think?

The surveyor has been, hopefully will get an install date soon. Basically they rip off the old waterproof layer, use solid insulation boards to make a new layer over the top of whats there (to avoid cold spots on the joists) and then put a new waterproof layer on top. I was due a new waterproof layer anyway, and cost to me is similar to just doing that.

It's also a way to make it seem like they're pumping in more money, like where they announced billions of investment into electric vehicles.

No, they were just not pulling it

For the GHG it's a double whammy, because as well as clawing 2/3 of it back after promising it the measures can only be installed by a select group of people. They charge about 50% more than 'normal' companies, so even if they spent a billion they only got 650m worth of work done.

So I finally got a visit, they came out on Friday and worked through til it was dark, and said they needed to come back to finish up. It's mostly done, but they hadn't put the flashing around it so you can still see the wooden frame.

Woke up this morning to a leak, all this rain plus wind in the right direction means the water came in under the frame

I see you’ll be getting some leak repairs out of them as well then.

They fixed the flashing, it still leaks. They were meant to be out yesterday to fix it, they cancelled. It's now raining, it leaks.

The government aren't exactly helping either. I have to redeem the voucher today or it expires, if it expires I am liable for the costs. I asked for an extension til it's fixed, they said no. So I either have to redeem it and they get paid despite the job not being finished (although I still owe them a grand, which they won't be seeing), or not redeem it and be liable for a vastly inflated initial quote that I agreed to because the government were paying it.

Current thinking is redeem it to remove my own liability, refuse to pay my share obviously, and get someone not associated with this scheme to fix it. Can you claim on your house insurance against a builder that did work if they damage it? Would they then chase the builder?

I wanna say no because the builder is the one that should have insurance (professionally indemnity) to cover professional negligence. Apparently it covers accidental damage by then but not bad workmanship

But yeah, claim the voucher and get that out of your hair, then worry about the rest. You don’t want to be liable for thousands on the basis of “what’s right”

Claimed the voucher, and the guy came back this afternoon anyway to look. He thinks he knows what the issue is but needs some dry time to fix it, he's done a few things to mitigate the issues til then.

Just found out the scheme cost on average £1,000 per claim in 'administration' costs. Therefore:

Job value: 3k maximum
Job valuation: Almost 6k
Cost to me: a little under 2k
Cost to taxpayer: 4k
Admin: 1k

So the government spent 5k to save me not quite 1k, excellent value for money!

Slightly off topic, I applied for a new boiler at a reduced price, due to a scheme that I qualified for being disabled. Finally came out after lockdown 1, and was quoted £600, £400 for the boiler, and £200 for additional pipe work to connect to the existing flue. The verbal quote never materialised into a written quote, despite me chasing them up. When they did finally reply, the quote had expired, and it would have to be surveyed again.......£1800!!! Boiler still at £400, new flue, as they couldn’t connect to the existing one, because they’ve got to cut into some plasterboard that was artexed that MAY have asbestos, £400 to do that, new roof kit for the new flue, and scaffold to go on the roof to fit the new roof kit (live in a bungalow, and no outside wall to site it on). And they still haven’t explained to me why the first survey was so wrong, and how they can now now justify the additional costs.

Starting to look for another quote/new supplier.....
