As I was about to start mowing the lawn I saw this fellah basking in the Sun on the paving by the conservatory. Haven't a clue what it is, and in order not to disturb it I danced around a bit with the mower when I got to the grass near the paving. When the Sun passed behind the roof and it was in shade, there was still no movement. A bit of closer examination with gloved hands revealed he/she had croaked. Gave him/her a decent burial in the grass cuttings and then had to rub my back because of all the acrobatics I had to do with the lawn mower in order not to disturb a stiff !!!

Slow worm.

It wasn't there yesterday, and I found it before I started mowing. So ... Not Guilty. Maybe something had a go at it and didn't like the taste. I know we all like nature, and what goes on within it. But it is a brutal business, and sure as hell not part of Disney Corporate thinking. :|

Slow worm.
Years and years ago in Coventry I went out the front door to find a huge 5 - 7 ft snake basking on the lawn.... Hurried phone call to the rcpca who would do nothing as it was a bank holiday, don't worry they said it'll be a slow worm! Now I know what a slow worm looks like and he defintly wasn't one... Neighbours had been attracted to my first screem of horror, and came to have a look.

Soon the bloke from round the corner turned up. It was a Rat Snake, he had brought it home from his from his 'pet shop' and it had escaped a few days earlier. He caught it within 2 mins. Thank goodness, I've never been so frightened.

I'm not a huge fan of snakes, but I rest assured that I'm quite unlikely to come across one in my current location.

Cyprus, however, was another matter. The lad I generally sat with on the 15 mile school bus journey each way was obsessed by every thing that moved. His mother told me that she hadn't been into his bedroom for the whole time that they had been on the island.

One day, he ran off downhill from the playground to retrieve a football and spotted the tail of a 'nice snake'. It was, apparently, hard to identify for sure, as there was a coating of dust and dirt on the few inches of tail that he could see sticking out from the pile of stone. Undeterred by the uncertainty, he grabbed the tail and pulled it out - it turned out to be a very disgruntled four-foot viper. He took a snap decision to keep a hold of it and whirl it round his head, in an attempt to stop it having a go at him. As he ran back up the hill, looking like some form of venomous helicopter, he cleared the playground of most of its occupants. Then he finally got it into a dustbin and put a stone on the lid.

He blagged the biology teacher into giving him some chloroform or something similar, to euthanise it with.

Taking the (presumed) corpse home on the bus, he was insistent that we should keep it straight whilst rigor mortis set in. So we sat with it resting across our four thighs and holding the head and tail up manually.

I was not at all convinced that it was necessarily dead, but we did get a far as his house without further incident.

What happened after that was not made public.

Stepdaughter arranged for Mrs Noah & me to go on an afternoon tea canal cruise with George's Canal Cruises at Teddersley Lock. Belated birthday & wedding anniversary treat. Very pleasannt two hour run, winding at Penkridge and back. Afternoon tea delicious. Think they alternate the Penkridge run with one down to Tixall Wide or Haywood Junction, might try that one sometime. Made us want a boat of our own again though.

Did they allow time for you to stop off in the Boat and / or Cross Keys ?

So glad we've got a friendly and helpful pharmacist nearby.
After a night worrying myself sick about my infected feet, and an hour constantly trying and failing to get through to the GP surgery this morning , the pharmacist has had a look , given some very good advice on how to treat , and sold me strong medication which the GP's prescribe.
Could have got it free on prescription , but as I couldn't even get through to the surgery I was happy to fork out the £20 to get the treatment started and not now in such a panicked state !

Pharmacists are brilliant. Many people could use them instead of the GP.

I've got great trust in him, if he thinks I should see a doctor instead he will tell me. I trust his advise and whatever he sells me when he can, as he dishes out my monthly medications so knows what I can and can't have .

He was my first port of call with the 'alien' suddenly growing out of my neck as well , but unfortunately got to wait for minor surgery on that one. :(
(GP said I'd hear "in about couple of weeks". I rang after a month to say heard nothing, to be told the doctors don't realise how long the waiting lists are.....going to be at least a years wait :o )

If they can sell you stuff, they should be authorised to prescribe it.
They are, a couple of years ago an insect bite started looking a bit strange, I went to the pharmacist to ask if there was anything I could put or if I should see a Dr.

He gave me a consultation in his tiny consultation room, diagnosed celutitus, and wrote me out a prescription (antibiotics) which I collected straight away. *my prescriptions are free as I'm diabetic.

They can really do a lot more than people think.

Yes, pharmacists can be as good as doctors, and so too can vets.
Given a serious emergency in an isolated location a vet will have more experience than a doctor for carrying out the necessary operation or other treatment.
