I'm currently at Penkridge market and I've been buying my plants from the nursery guys for years. It's the large stall (not the little stall when you first go in).
They've got hundreds of begonia 5 for £6.
They usually sell out by lunchtime though.
I'd forgotten about his stall, they really are great although you have to be there early as you say.

I don't think I've been to Penkridge Market since the pandemic started. I'll have to pop over when I can drive again.

All this hot weather has made my brassicas that were still in the green house shrivel up and die or bolt and go to seed

Greenhouse emptying mission it is then, trying to salvage what I can, hopefully I can get some more broccoli at the garden centre.

On a more positive note the first spuds are out of the ground along with celery, radish, spring onion and some lettuce. Salad for tea!

Does anyone know what this tree is?
Someone told me it was a cherry plum but it’s never had any blossom on it so it’s not that.

So far We have harvested 2 cucumbers, a dozen or so strawberries and plenty of salad leaves. Hopefully the courgettes wont be much longer. We have flowers on the tomatoes but are later this year than previous years

I pointed my phone at the screen and ran the Seek app. It said 'Dicots' ... I don't know if that's something, or just my phone being rude.

Then it said 'Triffid.' If that's right, best steer clear of that fellah. :P

According to Seek 98% of my garden and most of the surrounding hedgerows are made up of Dicots.

Having had a false start with the accidental flower bed this year, where the weeds got going well before the 'real' plants made any effort, I waited until the required occupants finally emerged and then removed (most of) the weeds, in the hope that future weed growth might be shaded out.

The larger seedlings are marigolds and are really moving on. The smaller ones are mostly forget-me-nots.

I've watered it last night and just now, in the hope of spurring them on. We haven't had any rain here for most of June, though we may get some in the night tonight - we'll see.

There was a highly successful experiment with the old heap in the corner over the last year. It has been used, with the corrugated sheets sheltering the contents, to recycle clods of earth - so clumps of grass, etc., can be just flung in there and will dry off, to be dug out as fairly 'clean' soil the next year.

I've started a separate heap for things that are a bit labour intensive to shred.

Enjoying a drop of red.
Can anybody recommend any colourful and quick growing ground cover plants/bushes that flower in July and August?
