Senior councillors will discuss the issue on Thursday which could see the "biggest transformation of the town centre in a generation."

It would see new pedestrian routes created along with a revamped Market Square which will be the focal point for events and activities.

Other plans include potentially re-locating the indoor market and re-designing it to improve footfall around the town centre, chiefs say.

Councillor Frances Beatty, cabinet member for economic development and planning at Stafford Borough Council, said: "This is very exciting and will lead to the huge rejuvenation of the north end of the town centre. Our plans, which have been backed by the Government, will make our county town a destination of choice.

"Along with new and improved facilities, we will also create attractive meeting spaces to bring people into the town for cultural and other reasons that will support the retail offer, therefore making a massive difference to the economy and the way the community views, and uses, the town."

The funding consists of more than £14.3 million from the Government's Future High Streets Fund and around £5.4 million from Stafford Borough Council.

The money is ring-fenced for projects within the town's High Street that are aimed at breathing new life into the north of the town centre, chiefs have said.

Stafford Borough Council's cabinet will be asked to approve the spending of £19,748,000 on the town centre's regeneration at a meeting on Thursday.

I hope money isn't wasted on pedestrianising more streets. All the streets that need to be pedestrianised has been done, we don't need anymore.

If rent & rates are too high no shops can afford to open no matter how much is wasted on tart & tinsel. I'd spend the cash on buying up the high street and create a social landlord where you can set affordable rents for the retail space and rental living accommodation above. In the current climate that £14 million could buy quite a bit if some who knows what their doing does the haggling! Sadly the old Co op store would swallow most of the cash now it's been left to rot!

Enjoying a drop of red.

The public sector does not do haggling. As it's not real money they are dealing with, only money that grows on trees, there is no need for them to haggle.

Best value relates to what goes in their back pockets, not how far tax payers money goes.

I don't know of any opening, I'm not knowlegeable about stuff like that. I do wish we could have a Lush shop somewhere.
I know other bath/shower/hair products are available, but I just adore their bath bombs. I honestly don't fancy having to drive Up 'anley Duck or to the Merry Hell Centre.

I visited the Tree House on Sunday for a Sunday Roast. A beautiful meal and lovely decor. I will be a regular visitor.

Lovely owners too.
