Stafford shops closing - Turning into a ghost town?

Staff were on furlough but found alternative employment during lockdown. They mostly still work nights , but most went Screwfix and are more comfortable with the rotating work system they have.

I do agree with the social side, so trying to hire enough staff to give the flexibility of having at least on weekend off a month.

I did 6 years there on and off, if my fiancee wasn't there too I'd never have lasted so long. We only got a weekend off if it was booked as holiday!

I went in the guildhall yesterday for the first time in probably 6 weeks. Even after seeing all the recent comments on here I was shocked at the state of the place. With that & the number of empty shops around the centre & side streets there doesn’t seem to be much of a future for our county town.

I walked to town today and W.H.Smith was closed. Sign on doors saying 'Temporary Closure' ...

Whole town seemed scruffy and parts looking derelict . Market Square was being worked on I assume for the Iron-man.

Work was going on at the premises which used to be Royal Bank if Scotland ( opposite Nationwide).

I just stocked up with books at PDSA ( thanks for heads up on the 50p books @Lucy ) and walked home again.

I went to Poundland this morning and the cashier was telling the customer in front of me that they were closing on 23rd August. The customer asked if they were re locating elsewhere in Stafford and the cashier said No.
I also needed to go to the Post Office in WH Smith , I entered the shop only to see a notice at the bottom of the stairs that new post office opening hours meant it was closed on a Saturday! and on further reading it was only open a few days in the week . I had to change my plans and visit a local Post office on the way home instead.

Always better to support a local post office anyway.

Have been using PO at Rising Brook shops for years! Proved itself much better than others; bloke in charge, not the most cheerful, but he is knowledgeable and helpful; and I think that is far more important.

I know a lot of people think he is very grumpy but I have to say I've never had a problem with him at all and witnessed him being extremely patient with his more senior clientele on many occasions. RB is the only post office I use now.
