They need to get better quotes. A decent sign that size would cost under £1k. I had one-slightly bigger that was illuminated for just over £1.5k and if they wanted that they would need planning permission.

looking at Thorntons, which is not a big shop by any means, the rateable value is £26,250 with rates payable of £1,074 a month. The building was sold a few years ago at which point they were paying £30k a year rent. So that is just over £3,500 a month just on rent and rates, thats an awful lot...

Stafford shops closing - Turning into a ghost town?

Looks like Thorntons have finally thrown in the towel. Hardly surprising as their business model was all about undercutting their own shops. Not sure about Clintons, the Stafford shop now looks just like the Cannock shop before they closed it down - anything that is not a card has been removed...

The slow crawl out of self distancing

This is what is wrong with us all - one person deciding that someone elses' purchase is "non essential". I wonder how many people thought "Wood Filler?, that's hardly essential is it?" Perhaps if we stopped judging each other - they may well have picked up the plant on the way to the till after...

Charity pests in Stafford? AKA Chuggers

Judging by the Express and Star this week the Council are more concerned with removing A boards for businesses who employ people and pay rates and who are trying to get people into their shops than removing Chuggers. Spouting the usual "Health and Safety" rubbish while ignoring the hundreds of...

I don't know why, but it has narked me a bit so a follow up: "Black's Law Dictionary defines unlawful as "not authorized by law, illegal." Illegal is defined as "forbidden by law, unlawful." Semantically, there is a slight difference. It seems that something illegal is expressly proscribed by...

illegal /ɪˈliːɡ(ə)l/ adjective adjective: illegal contrary to or forbidden by law, especially criminal law Unlawful is contrary to law, not particularly criminal law and covers more Civil offences (at least that's what I remember from my studies many, many moons ago)

Genuinely illegal - it goes against the Sale of Goods Act and the Consumer Rights Act - it must include the phrase "This does not affect your statutory rights" where, of course you can get a refund if there is something wrong or the product was mis sold or not fit for purpose. The sign is...

I know it’s not my favourite type of shop but I noticed the furniture shop opposite McDonalds has a big “we do not refund” sign on the wall. This type of sign is illegal. If I thought for one minute the trading standards people in Stafford would give a toss I’d report it, as they won’t I’ll just...

no need to apologise, like most forums anybody with an opinion (or “an attitude” if the opinion is not a popular one) is usually perceived as a man because females can’t have opinions, they only moan.

Sorry, I stand corrected, they are still there for now. Whether they will still be there when the rates bill arrives is another matter, the rateable value is mad. In other news, the card shop opposite Clinton’s that leeches off the town at Christmas is going.

Looked like the pop up shop at Greenwood’s old place was packing up tonight.i would bet they haven’t paid a single bill. I really dislike these shops who take trade away from those who pay their bills all year.

    2019 General Election

Never before have I wanted a "None of the above" option so much. If I could afford it I would even be willing to start a party of that name if I didn't think it would win as per Brewsters Millions.
