I know this is ages old but in addition to the others mentioned here, both wetherspoons have free (patchy) wifi (where you need to register for the cloud service), and The Vine has good wifi that doesn't require registering. I've had this same problem myself so wandered around doing a scan.

I've been using Plupper on my website. Also free, plus it integrates nicely with Pidgin (AIM/ICQ/MSN whatever you use). Volusion looks pretty good too, do you have to stay logged into a back-end to respond to visitors?
